Interesting topic. Ridley Scott was quoted as saying that music is 50% of the film; it certainly shows through his wonderful work. Without music, we'd only watch films, rather than feel them, and that wouldn't be half as good, would it?

Some that I think haven't been listed yet:

Heat: The first one is perfectly judged in adding to the tension of the situation; sucks you into the way they're all feeling.

And Moby (I think?), who's music has been rather overused, but here it suits Mann's style perfectly (the music over the chase across the runways - about 4m50secs or so).

Heat's a good soundtrack all round.

Then there's one of the great films of all time (in my humble opinion), Jacob's Ladder. And a haunting piece from Maurice Jarre entitled L'chelle be Jacob:

Someone said Mulholland Drive, and the standout piece is Llorando:

I remember hearing this on the radio a few years ago - even the DJ was blown away by it and played it twice in 20minutes.

Finally, a bit different, but from Les chevaliers du ciel; You're the conversation by Chris Corner. Never seen the film but spectacular footage here as well:

And I can only second everyone who said Lisa Gerrard (remember The Insider as well).

Heat finale - God Moving over the Face of the Waters, Moby
First on your list, and also first thing that came to mind for me too. In fact, if I were to put together a list of the first pieces of cinema/score combos that I liked, a large proportion would be from Michael Mann films. He really does know how to take great music and match it to powerful imagery.

Also from Heat, and also Moby, the scene where Pacino is pursuing De Niro down the road to Moby's Cover of the Joy Division track New Dawn Fades is a prime example.

Ok, Ok so we all agree the Italian Job must win! But I just have to give you my favourite.

It's the opening theme to True Romance (Which happens to be my favourite film). The music of Hans Zimmer really does it for me, the cold, wintery streets of Detroit (I think it's Detroit), the polce sirens and the steam from the subway. It's perfect.

Couldn't find a You Tube clip of the film, you'll have to make do with the music and stills....enjoy. wink

I still prefer the Hans Zimmer tune though.
