I'm still wondering how a PS2, a PS3, two desktop PC's and an internet connection is living in 'poverty'? I couldn't see if they had Sky or Cable as they didn't show much of their living room, I did however joke to the girlfriend that once the cameras are gone they probably pull the plasma back out from wherever they've hidden it (and given that the PS3 kept disappearing and reappearing it wouldn't surprise me)

The narrater said the 'poor' family were taking home £413 a week when you combine his wages and her benefits.

Not that poor then...

£413 per week grossed up really isn't that bad at all IMO!

I bought my first house when I was earning far less than that, although admittedly I was on my own.

I didn't like the woman in this one, she came across as rather selfish and they both seemed to be smoking a lot when the cameras are on and in the flat with the kids - give that up and they'd save a fortune......well enough to buy the kid some shoes at least!!!!!!

And the excuse for the kids not sharing a bedroom as both were light sleepers!!!!!! And......? Surely they'd get used to it!

I picked up on that too! I'm no mathematician but £413 a week must equate to around just under £1800 a month. If that is net, then this must be roughly the equivalent of £25k a year gross salary. Isn't that around or more than the average UK wage?

So, living in a small flat with no car to run, how can they be in such poverty? I think I'll write to Ch4 to see if they're making another series, to see if some `rich' family wants to throw a few grand my way!!

Sad I know but I've ben scrutinising this 'poor' family on 4OD;

http://www.channel4.com/programmes/how-the-other-h...

These people are not in poverty, they just have piss poor money management skills which I assume is down to the hag of a mother.

First off;

In the opening shot of the family in poverty's flat, you can clearly see a SKY TV dish. At 5min 15sec you can see the Sky Digital box next to the TV, it's on top of what looks like a subwoofer!

They also have three PC's with two LCD monitors!! There's two on the table in the living room (a smaller one behind the big tower with the expensive looking printer on top) and one in the kids room under the cabin bed (4min 55sec). They also have an internet connection (possibly comes free with the SKY TV) which also means they have a phone line!!

So far that's a monthly Sky TV subscription, possibly an internet sub and a telephone sub! So about £30-£50 a month then, possibly more depending on their TV package.

then of course there's the £150 they spent on a DVD Recorder / HD, the kids PS2, a PS3, a ton of games and yet, they don't even have curtains in any of the rooms.

This show is mind boggling, surely the cameramen were walking around noticing all of this stuff? Why weren't they called up on any of it?

ETA: It gets better, apparently Pimlico Plumbers are somewhat of reality TV wes, having been on a few shows and they're represented by Max Clifford!

I would have laughed if Mrs O'D had blown the two grand on a massive lump of crack, which she'd smoked with her children, and then sent the Mullins a DVD of that. Thanks for the money, really appreciated it! Well, I wouldn't have laughed really, because children smoking crack – anyone smoking crack – isn't a laughing matter. And I have no reason to believe that Mrs O'D even likes crack
hehe

To Oakey, that is what really fuXXs me off about these sort of people. I work 60 odd hrs a week, my girlfriend probably works 40 odd and we can't afford Sky TV, have an old relic of a TV, no land line, no PC as I'm saving up to buy one (I understand that saving is probably an Alien concept to these sort of scum) and generally not that much money to throw around. Perhaps I should follow their lead and buy a massive plasma, top end PC, broadband connection, Sky subscription and then throw my hands up and plead poverty?

Unbelievable, they're paying £61.79 A MONTH to Virgin Media, for TV and internet no doubt. £61.79!!!

You can see here what they spent the money on:

So here's a rundown;

Council Tax - £196.72 (Even though the bill is £296.72)
Nursery - £310
Virgin - £61.79
Laptop / DVD Recorder - £735.27
Washer / Dryer - £580.99
Food - £29.59 (Good to see where their priorities are)
Computer Mouse and Scart Cable - £51.26
Unknown Item - £80.85

Total: £1965.62 of which £1316.26 went on the mothers crap

Just been watching this weeks episode. It's a refreshing change from the usual chavs & stuck up s that have taken part in the previous shows. Worth a watch on C4+1

Never seen this series before but I thought they were well deserving of help, such a lovely daughter too. These are the sorts of people the benefits system should be helping not the usual scum who only money to pay for cider, fags and Sky!

edit to say that maybe 'usual' not the best word to use but I think you know what I mean

All round nice people. A nice show to watch although from what's been said about the last series I guess it's usually much more annoying. So nice to see the kids playing with each other without any prejudice or judgement.

Yep agreed I thought they were very deserving of the help, seemed a respectable family. Felt sorry for the woman who worked so hard to get a masters in Law yet could barely afford to feed her daughter.

It's an awful thing to say but I did wonder if one of the reasons she hasn't had success was the way she looked. Good on the chap for having faith in her though and I really hope she does well.

I was really quite moved by it, especially by the kid of the "poor" mum.
Unfortunately by the time she was corrupted by the money, all she wanted was "stuff"
but fair play, the "poor" mum was a clever lass that tried hard and still did not get anywhere until the family sponsored them.
The "rich" were ok too, as they came from nothing and had made all of the cash themselves - also he had an Aston.. nice smile

Having tasted the legal profession, I can confirm that irrespective of her intellect, she'd get nowhere without inside help. Law is the most institutionalised profession one can enter; unless you've got the right parents, or went to the right school, you've had it.

That's why I got out.

Anyway, whilst I appreciate the 'poor' family were living on the bread-line, the estate in which they stayed was hardly the west Beirut was it?

Best of luck to the Mother though; her heart was in the right place.

I was really surprised when they said about all of her law qualifications, I suppose that comes down to her looks, so quite shallow and stereotypical of me! She doesn't look like how I would imagine a barrister to look.

Was a great show,heart-warming smile

I thought it was a good show and hopefully will continue in the same vein for the rest.

I was impressed with the kid when she suggested after getting £4k that they pay off what they needed to and hand the rest back!

What interested me (as being on benefits!) is that she was earning £400 a month and according to the note shown on the wall her rent was £120 and council tax was £70. So on this basis she had £210 left a month. If she was just on Job Seekers Allowance which is currently £64.30 a week (going up to £65.45 on the 16th!!) so £257.20 a month plus her council tax would be paid so that's £327.20. So it would seem she would be better off on benefits - I tip my hat to her for being proud and getting a low paid job if that is the case.

Didn't see the programme, but from the pre-blurb assumed she didn't deserve sympathy because she found herself in the position of being poor through her own self indulgent life choices - ie to become a new age traveller. As opposed to those who need state intervention because of their inability to provide for themselves - she was bright enough to have had a good career.

Clearly I missed something and am a bigoted t**spot
