What the hell!

I have spent 27 years believing that he jumped the fence to freedom. Finally sat down and watched it on Living today and he doesn't make it.

How can i have been mislead all these years. The iconic image is a symbol of success and escaping, not jumping the little fence and not the big one!

complaint over.

Most people think Steve McQueen did the stunt but it was his friend Bud Ekins.

Towards the closing scenes Steve Mcqueen plays the part of a guard on the bikes chasing him as well, they then put the footage together which back in the 60's was quite an achievement.

Also he tries to escape on a 1960's British Triumph motor bike during the war scratchchin

It's OK though, because Leo di Caprio dies.

Of course, the Steve McQueen character is the one major fiction of the whole story. Still a great movie though.

Apart from Hilt, and the motorcycle element, it seems fairly accurate, for a Hollywood film at least:

(I know its Wiki so not the be all and end all, so is there anything missing from the article that was a major innacuracy?).

As the Wiki article indicates, there is a lot more fiction and artistic licence than just Hilts. Sure, it's gives a reasonably accurate flavour of events but it is by no means entirely factual.
