Not in the least trying to defend the bloke - he's the annoying vegetarian type that gives us all a bad name, but being vegan has nothing to do with it. Jelly is usually made with gelatin which is made from animals. (Nowadays it even seems to tell you whether it's pork or beef gelatin).

I was labouring under the misconception that it was only if you were vegan you wouldnt eat meat related products, dairy, etc?

Vegans are the ones that avoid anything to do with animals, no eggs, dairy produce, a cow might have brushed against it, that sort of thing.

Most vegetarians (some are more picky than others and some are complete cocksmiths about it like our friend on TV) avoid things made with animal fat, gelatine, etc. - stuff made from dead animals basically.
