I know that a lot of people don't like Ross, but I thought he did a great job of presenting Film. Can't say that I think Winkleman is an obvious choice.

I am shocked and appalled. I thought Mark Kermode was going to get it, but maybe the powers that be consider him a bit too "high brow"

And I though 'Wossy' was a step down! They're properly digging, now, it seems.

I cannot think of a more vacuous TV presenter. That appointment is about as suitable as having Gary Glitter present the "Children solve puzzles whilst blind folded in a darkened room" show.

Has dumbing down gone too far?

I'll wait and see, we have to give her the opportunity to be good. She is a presenter, so if the research team behind her are good, it might not be a complete lost cause.

Ross was either a very enthusiastic movie critic, who really knew his stuff, or did an AMAZING job of convincing us he knew what he was talking about.

Am surprised at the vitriol against her, I think she's very good. Although she may feign daftness, she's no Fearne Cotton.

Kermode was the better choice though....although he does have dodgy taste on some stuff wink

Does anyone know if she is a film buff? I get the impression from when I have seen her that she is a bit of a geek. A Kick-Ass/Star Trek/Tarantino type fan like Ross.

Kermode was my choice too, but he is the obvious replacement. My only reservation about him is that I don't think he would view something trashy and fun, like a Stallone film, in the same way that Ross could.

I think the point is that no one has ever considered her to be a fan of film. Personally, after Kermode, I think they should have considered some of the broadsheet/internet film critics. I'm sure some of them would be more than capable.

She hosts an Arts programme on Radio 2 so covers the Kermode side of things as well.

Jesus Christ...when will tv execs get it into their fking tiny heads that professional tv presenters will never be as good at presenting as someone who has a genuine interest in the programme material???

FFS why noy get melinda messenger or Jordan to do it. Mark Kermode was the only choice.

Disgrace.

Ever since Barry Norman gave it up "Film 20XX" has been ste. This will be no improvement.

...and I guarantee that if you make the mistake of watching it you will throwing be slippers at the TV in short order. Are you likely to agree with her assessments of the latest movies?

At least JR had a genuine passion for films - evident before he got the gig for film 20XX. Winkleman is just another rent-a-presenter who's got nothing of value to say beyond "I liked this film". Just a classic example of tv execs choosing style over substance.
