At least JR had a genuine passion for films - evident before he got the gig for film 20XX. Winkleman is just another rent-a-presenter who's got nothing of value to say beyond "I liked this film". Just a classic example of tv execs choosing style over substance.
They could have as easily given the job to Kate Humble for exactly the same reasons.

Better still, we could have had Tim Lovejoy giving us his thoughts.

Please - presenters are very very rarely subject matter experts.
Ross was nothing more than an enthusiastic amatuer - did he even write the show himself or was that done by scriptwriters.

I like Ross - I will miss him when he dissapears from R2 but surely the first requirement of any TV presenter is that they can pronounce the words on the telepromter?

I know it's not the PH way, but why not see how she actually does before slagging?

With a History of Art degree from Cambridge she's not your average dumb bimbo; do you all know for a fact that she has absolutely no interest in film?

I thought JR would be ste and I'm glad to say he proved me wrong (in fact, it's been his best platform IMO)

There's a degree to which film buffs are offputting, Kermode occasionally strays into pseud territory. although not as bad as that Norn Irish fella Mark (?) Cousins, he's a complete pillock.

I don't think anyone said that, it's just that she isn't known as a film enthusiast.

Look at the best tv "presenters" and they're almost always people with a passion on the subject they are working with

Clarkson - ignore the over hyped cliche he's become, for a long time he was an excellent presenter because you can clearly see his passion for cars

If you want the ultimate example though, then my man Richard Holmes is the don of TV presenters. He used to do a programme on BBC2 called War Walks - usually I'd have no interest, but this guys passion came across so well on screen I became addicted....here's a sample...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulcexsYHpNQ&fea...

he's a university history lecturer and not a cliched good looking rent-a-presenter (see Dan Snow) and his passion and enthusiasm made him brilliant.

Sorry for going slightly OT.

Maybe the BBC have got confused and had heard of a series called Peep Show thinking it was about films in which someone called Sophie Winkleman starred. Wrong sister Beeb.

yep, a terrible choice; another vacuous bint put in because it was time to even up the gender choice or some equivalent bull.

I was gutted when Kermode said he didn't want the job last week.

I like Claudia and think she'll do OK, it's not as if anyone takes reviews seriously.

Apparently she does an arts show on the radio which I didn't know. My initial thought was how is she going to do this properly, maybe she is more into films than we thought.

Mark K never wanted the job and was never on any shortlist etc, I think he would have been far too heavy for the position. As he said himself how can you employ someone for this job who thinks 3D is a con!

And re: the comment on Dan Snow. He's hardly a rent a presenter when he pretty much only covers his area of interest, historical based documentaries. (He has a first class honours degree in modern history)

Jesus Christ...when will tv execs get it into their fking tiny heads that professional tv presenters will never be as good at presenting as someone who has a genuine interest in the programme material???

FFS why noy get melinda messenger or Jordan to do it. Mark Kermode was the only choice.

Disgrace.
Whilst i agree that Kermode would be my first choice, Wrinklebutt is known as a film buff, so will have to give that to her.

Like someone said, maybe we should give her a chance, or is that idea just too 'out there' for the PH massive to handle smile

She may well be "into" her films. All I can go on is my knowledge of her and AFAICS she is an classic rent-a-presenter popping up on whatever show/chatshow/quiz show will pay her a fee. I've nothing against her personally other than she represents the archetypal vapid, insincere, talentless mong that populate tv screens for no other reason that they dont fall to pieces in front a tv camera - you could put dozens of names on that list. She appears to have no discretion as to what show she'll plant her face on thus far so why should I automatically give her any slack because she's somehow managed to convince some moron at the BBC that she's the right direction for one of the BBC's longest running shows?

I can totally see the BBC's reasoning - despite what they say they need viewing figures to justify the licence fee and they probably think a Kermode like presenter will alienate too many viewers who want/need/expect a bland anaodyne unchallenging face in front of them.
