The Damned United

Did anyone watch this on TV last night?
I know it was released last year, but it's the first time I've seen it. It was one of the best homegrown dramas I've seen in a while
Martin Sheen's performance as Brian Clough was brilliant and Colm Meaney was an excellent Don Revie look alike.
10/10 from me.

crap! I really fancied seeing this when it first came out but never got round to it. I missed it on TV last night, what channel was it on? Maybe it will be repeated or it's on a catch-up site.
It was on BBC2, so may show up on iPlayer (some things don't though, e.g. Family Guy).bobbins said:
Aye, went to see it and watched it again last night. Few inaccuracies on there but it was generally really well done - Sheen was outstanding, really nailed the role.
it was very inaccurate, its based on the book which is only based on the 44 days he spent at leeds, its written as fiction.there was a whole court case as they gave the impression when it first came out that it was fact but they had to retract the books etc that gave that impression, and had to pay Johnny giles out of court (IIRC) because of the way he is portrayed in the book.
the book is much harder on the memory of clough, but even with a milder screenplay, its still a fictional work.
i am biased against it as a forest fan, but i have read the book and seen the film, and laughed at them and with them, but I was also lucky enough to meet the man himself twice, and the air about him was of confidence and belief not arrogance.
i agree though, sheen was an inspired choice.
I hate football but liked Clough. I thought it was good but Billy Bremner's wig spoilt it for me. I do recall the thuggery well as my mate was an avid Leeds supporter and actually expected the tactical use of the forearm smash in the game. Good to see Cloughy driving a 60's Zodiac even when he went to Leeds being true to his working class roots. You could see why the Capri in the car park sold so well.
but he left with the merc...original champagne socialist maybe??....
I've read the book and seen the film, the film is a lot 'nicer' to clough than the book. Sheen and murphy were excellent choices and Tim Spall played a good part too, as many people forget that without peter taylor , clough was nowhere near as successful.
There is a propensity these days to look at clough with rose coloured specs. His CV will live on and never be surpassed, two european cups in two years, I dont think will be equalled, it was a magnificent achievement...but....he was very arrogant, would have a made a lousy employee, was bigotted, a bully and ultimately a broken alcoholic by the time of his last match.
For a more factual and unbiased take on cloughs life and achievements then try 'Provided you dont kiss me' by Duncan Hamilton who was the sports reporter on the nottingham evening post for 20 years of clough reign, its respectful whilst not pulling any punches

Just happened on this as I was about to head to bed, decided to watch five minutes of it as I remembered thinking it could be good when it came out, ended up watching the whole thing with the girlfriend and we have VERY little interest in football.
An excellent film, brilliantly acted and written.

agreed but I'd rather have people with extreme personality than a pc droid. hence why i like jose too. yes he could be bigotted but at the same time forest had the first black player to play for england so he was not pc yes, bigotted no.Peter Tayor was definitly a great man. Shame clough got injured. I can see why the fa dared not employ him though!
Read the book which is excellent -but has a much 'darker' edge to it, then saw the film the other night- also excellent (Michael Sheen, Timothy Spalding and Jim Broadbent all outstanding) but I thought took a much more affectionate perspective regarding the Clough-Taylor symbiotic relationship. (While it made for uncomfortable reading/viewing as a Leeds fan, I did reflect on where Leeds might have gone if they had embraced him but then history shows he was only really successful with Taylor by his side!)
Whatever Clough's faults, the football world has been a damn-sight duller without him.
