Goes without saying that John Williams is the daddy.

+1 to Blade Runner

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMMAQbJeG8E - Blackhawk Down has a pretty good soundtrack.

Clint Mansell's Lux Aeterna is a corker, too.
That's that. Also reorchestrated for the trailer of LOTR : The Two Towers (was gutted to find it wasn't in the film)

There are a few DeNiro films with good soundtracks - the Deer Hunter is another cracking one.

Spooky very nearly the very same subject is discussed at length, with David Arnold

on http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00tcpzl/Kerm...

Loads of great soundtracks, but two that are both very recent I enjoyed when I heard them, the film Sherlock Holmes, and Arnold's music to the tv Sherlock.

Thomas Newman Scent of Woman, American Beauty. Really liked The International, done by the director Tom ... ? Quite liked Shutter Island's OST as well.

Loads of good suggestions above. Some of these are tricky to get hold of but worth the effort:

Back to the Future, Alan Silvestri (the score, not the soundtrack)
Wargames, Arthur Rubinstein
The Insider, Lisa Garrard
Aliens, James Horner
Babel, Gustavo Santaolalla
Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan, James Horner
Local Hero, Mark Knopfler
Gladiator, Hans Zimmer
North by Northwest, Bernard Herrman
Pirates of the Caribbean the Curse of the Black Pearl
Inception, Hans Zimmer
Raiders of the Lost Ark, specifically for the track "The Map Room: Dawn" which is one of the best pieces John Williams has ever written.

And anything by Ennio Morricone

Oh and Smokey and the Bandit, Jerry Reed for "The Legend" and "East Bound and Down" winksmile

The map room fantastic. This question has been asked quite a lot on here I don't think I haveever seen anybody mention raiders.

Of course Ennio goes without saying Extasy of gold being my favourite

For me it has to be The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the music suited the films and complimented each scene without detracting from it, and is memory invoking to a "T" when listened to on their own.

As a bit of a guilty secret I really like the Music for the Harry Potter and Jurassic park movies as well.

I'll say it cos I'm amazes no one else has movie theme music bigger and perhaps more memorable than the film itself.

Eric Serra also write the score for Leon, which is in my opinion, one of the best.

The sniper scene in particular is just superb.

Most of Thomas Newman's work I love - American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Revolutionary Road, Shawshank etc.
