I've only just started watching the wire, but I instantly thought of the corner. Not many episodes but an excellent (true) story.

Treme – I've just started watching it and it's beautifully shot and full of great music. A very enjoyable series!

The Sopranos!

Other than that, The West Wing and The Shield are well worth a look.

I was about to buy the shield boxset as it's by the dude who's currently doing sons of anarchy but bought brotherhood as it was cheaper, I need to finish the wire season 2 also

It is indeed based on the book, an excellent read. On the DVD there is an extra where you meet the 'real' characters.

If you haven't watched The Sopranos I would definitely watch that. It's the best ever TV show.

Also The Sheild, Sons of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, Brotherhood, Trailer Park Boys, Deadwood, OZ are all worth a watch.
