Anyone else watch this on ch4 last night? It basically follows a family taking their kids out of school for a year to do something exotic abroad.

Last nights episode involved a "buddhist" mum taking her family to Asia to immerse themselves in local culture and visit tribes in remote areas and to experience "basic life" away from their usual modern environment.

Wasn't too bad and definately a good experience for the kids, however I could not help but think that the mother was slightly deluded as to the realities of what she had planned out hehe

I was going to start a thread on this earlier. I quite enjoyed it, although they did only show the bits where they were roughing it with other families/tribes, whch would have been about a month in total, I don't imagine the rest of the holiday was quite the same.

The thing that made me cringe the most was when the wife stated that money was no object at the beginning!

All that said, I'm looking forward to next weeks episode!

I tried to watch it but couldn't, basically because I took an instant dislike to the mum. She doesn't believe in conventional medicine and so none of them had any of the neccessary innoculations for the exotic places they were visiting, and she was relying on homeopathic remedies in the middle of a mosquito infested jungle as protection from malaria.

Do these stupid, ignorant, illogical and irrational idiots need a kid to become seriously ill or even die before they take their delusional head out from up their ass?

I get quite irked by these types. Luckily they did OK.

Not to mention her commiting them to a dangerous 2 day trek where a 4WD carrying her 2 sons rolled twice...

What would the phrase "risk management" mean to her? Meditate more?

Do the kids know their mum is a mental?

Where's that thread about mental women? Which chapter of the Haynes manual?

If ever somebody should not be allowed NEAR a child...

And what about the father? Allowing her to take those risks with his kids?

Yup, watched it this afternoon. Interesting programme. What stood out to me was, the tribes children discovering skipping courtesy of the white families children. Astonishing as, it is not something one would even think about and, just accepted that every child would do so. Certainly opens ones eyes!

I really enjoyed it. I liked the message of the quote during the intro, paraphrased as, "you've got a nice car on the driveway, money in the bank and the house is paid for, but have you got any stories?"

Aside from the homeopathic medicines which was rather deluded (although they survived...), I thought the mum was fine. After all, the whole thing was her idea and in doing it she's given the kids more life in one year than they would have in 70 in the UK.

The only thing that narked me a bit was that I thought the younger two kids were too young to really appreciate what they were doing, but if nothing else it has probably planted the seeds in their mind for later in their lives. The whole skipping development was superb though smile

banghead You've clearly missed the entire point of the show.

Who was that Llama bloke they were so excited to meet? Looked like he had a few quid, flying around by helicopter and having an escort of several cars

The Dalai Lama

Basically a spiritual leader for buddhists, a sort of living saint. He's most prominent for speaking out against Chinese rule of Tibet.

Pretty much, he is considered to be a living god (spirit of a god passed into his body?)

He was a legend though:

In response to "We appreciate your hard work" he responded "I'm a troublemaker!"

In response to "We all, the family, converted to Buddhism" he replied with a "pah!" and a wave of the hand as if he couldn't give a st whilst walking off laugh

Yeah from the limited exposure to him, he seemed pretty down to earth. He's probably loving the fact he's got all these people basically worshipping the ground he walks on

This weeks adventure a family have a 4x4 and drive a long way across a desert. I'm bored watching it. sleep

No wonder it overheated it's got a great big lump of plastic on the front!

Just crashed, that's the only reason I was watching. Idiot.

ETA. On reflection maybe I'm wrong. His logic was basically if his missus was driving it would have been worse but as it's his fault he can deal with it! No. If your wife was driving it probably wouldn't have happened you tit. rolleyes

Sorry but he's obviously some idiot suit office worker who's never had any experience if off roading or vehicles. "That's the water, that's oil. Ok you tit?". rage

Sorry. Makes me so mad.

Can't believe he crashed after less than a week, not even looking at the road just his GPS!

I can't believe what I have just seen. According to the son, the father was driving along using the sat-nav to navigate as it was too dark to see where they were going. Unmade road as well - his excuse; the sat-nav was showing a straight road and didn't show the bend in the road.

This programme is amazing from a family that relied on mung beans and bamboo extract instead of medicine. A family that ate a red fish with a blue mouth. I am no fish expert but am aware that bright colours normally indicate toxicity. Then they got poisoned. Total shocker.
This chap with his land cruiser is the biggest joker yet. Driving with zero visability and crashing and taking chances with bandits. Amazing.
