Are there any good radio stations?
Discussion
I caught some of Hallam FM and Viking FM on my drive to work - only about 30 seconds worth though as they are truly God Awful - I've tried listening to them before but they spout the most mindless drivel, the music is rubbish, the presenters ought to be taken out and shot, the adverts make me want to smash my radio in and in general, I can't stand it.
My OH listens to Viking and I have tried to listen, I really have, but I just hate it.
I listen to Radio 2 on occasion and while I enjoy Chris Evans, Ken Bruce and the drivetime show (Simon Mayo?), I can't stand Jeremy Vine - Steve Wright just makes me want to drive down to whereever he's broadcasting and ram that microphone as far in to his eye socket as is physically possible.
I also listen to Radio 4, but that's the same as Radio 2 apart from there's even more whackos on it.
So I put music on and spend ages hunting for something that I want to listen to while my mood changes (Dire Straits at the moment) and lament the fact that I'd rather be listening to the radio and then go through the whole "try the radio" dance again.
Are there any decent radio stations out there? Is it just me?
Why is it, though, that songs often sound better on the Radio anyway?

When proper FM is switched over to DAB - will DAB signals be boosted?
I say this because I can't wait to get Radio 6 music out on the road. Its on my radio most of the time, if not some rock station.
I like the internet radio stations which I play via wireless on my ipod touch through a speaker doc. SOMA FM based in California has some great chillout & indie channels.

There's a Real Radio in Yorkshire - it's not that offensive, but the adverts are.
what frequency?around here there's nothing as you say. i would love DAB to be able to pick up 6 music.
in manchester, 96.2 revolution started off amazingly well, with many local muso's [mani, clint boon etc.] having their own show. the range and quality of the music was fantastic. i used to know the exact point crossign the penines where i could tune in, sadly much more generic these days so i don't bother.
I like to listen to Radio 1 while I'm in the car - Chris Moyles on the way in to work, and Scott Mills on the way home.
I like the mix of pop and daft chat.
Lots of people don't like Radio 1 of course, and prefer talking stations, or classical things.
Or listening to infinitely-repeated replacement window adverts interspersed with the Black-Eyed Peas on commercial radio.
Depends what you're after - which sounds essentially like Radio 2 but with half of it different.
I don't know.

Not sure what I'm after really - just something I like, which, is of course subjective, but sometimes it's the DJs that make the difference.
Oddly enough, I never hear anyone say that they like Steve Wright...

Radio is one of my pet hates.
I like listening to music on it when I'm driving for a living but unfortunately this limits me to pretty much R1,2,4 & classic. My biggest hate are these so called entertainers like, well, any of the people already mentioned. I don't want to listen to any of them & quite frankly don't understand why they are needed at all.
Take Zoe Ball for example, she keeps turning up on R2 lately & I always feel as though I'm back in the school playground every time she speaks. I'm sure she still thinks she's on R1 aiming her shows at 12 year old girls.
Neither do I want to listen to these stupid games or quizzes either, & I really don't care what Mrs Smith from Nottingham thinks about anything. If you're a member of the public please don't ring any radio show because I really don't want to listen to your thoughts or views on anything.
All I want is music & traffic but I realise I'm not going to get that so I compromise now & know roughly when the traffic is on R2, so I listen at those times & then go back to cd. But I don't like cds either, I don't like knowing what's coming next (I know I'm strange).
I like listening to things like God's juke box or shake rattle & role both with Mark Lamarr, or sounds of the sixties with Brian Mathews. I like these shows because the music is different & in Lamarr's case it's certainly not the run of the mill stuff, but unfortunately all the stuff I like seems to be on at very strange & unsociable times.
But now I have it sussed, I download the stuff I like & put it on cd Now I can listen to the likes of Lamarr & different types of music at any time without the so called entertainers dribbling on & on & on, no quiz shows & no awful Zoe Ball talking to me like I'm a 12 year old.
Fantastic & I highly recommend doing the same if you're as pissed off as I am with the state of our radio.
