There is no evidence of Roman barrows!
Sorry but, was posted (at time of in programme) in reference to the professors remark 'as the weather is so good, should you not be a couple of weeks in advance of the schedule rather than on schedule'.

I think the professor is suggesting that the Romans would have made their workers (slaves?) continue working if there was sunlight and good weather. I guess the problem is that trying to be authentic to historical working practices takes no account of modern legal requirements.

What's all this with the modern scaffold? I thought only authentic Roman stuff was to be used!
They wanted to. But the nasty, horrid ogre of a health & safety man wouldn't let em.

All that, erm, work on the trusts and, still got it wrong. Mind, I did have reservations when the carpenter went off for three days to work out how much timber would be required to complete the framework.

So the carpenter is now gone. Being fair to the chap, roofing, especially timber frame, is a different ball-game to the type of carpentry he has been used to (shop fitting) and is a specialist job.

I'd hate to think what the product of three days sucking through teeth would produce. hehe

Did anyone else think they way they put up the wooden frames was asking for trouble? They were pushing the wod up with scafold poles by thier chests. So if the scafolding or the wire rope failed you would get the full weight of the wooden frame pushing a scafold pole through your chest.

It's amazing how smooth they are getting that timber, with just the use of an axe. wink

It's still fascinating to watch, and see just how technological the Romans were.

The builders (in the main) seem like they are having a good time as well, putting in a bit more effort now than they did before.
