Saw this too, frankly I was not to surprised in some ways as I think to the slightly socially aware and the even vaguely intelligent we know the unionised morons ruined a once great economy in the name of socialist revolution and protection... It was just interesting to see the BBC say it for once!

How could this be! Unionized workers ruining everything?!

They should drive a fine British Leyland automobile! Their products are the pinnacle of engineering produced by a unionized workforce.

Seriously though, this is why our economy is in the dumps yet Germany dipped in and out of recession fairly quickly. They are tons more efficient. They strike more than we do and work less, but when they work they are very productive. Also, their heavy industry didn't consist of state-owned behemoths that run simply to keep dullards employed so they'd vote the next Labour government in.

I mean, British Leyland is just a perfect example of how unions and moronic business practice have turned Britain from a proud industrial nation into a country where hairdressers and nail parlours are the most prevalent business.

I'm not so sure.... There was a story of a number of Scottish engineers who worked in Germany. The Germans eventually sent them home because they were too slow. Why?, Because they wouldn't throw a part away. Whereas the Germans rejected it and sentit back the Scots Fixed it and used it.
