Right, I'm located in the West Midlands and the full, proper switchover happens tomorrow (20th). I've seen lots of adverts etc. stating that everyone will have to retune - fine.

Will there be any sort of difference, ie. better signal and therefore more channels on Freeview?

Also, on a side note, my grandparents have had a huge Sony tube telly for about 10 years with built-in Freeview which they've had no problems with until the first 'changeover' on the 6th when they retuned and lost all digital channels. I had a fiddle and can't get any either - only terrestrial, which they'll lose tomorrow. Any ideas if they'll get digital back tomorrow? I can't work out why they've suddenly lost it. Could it be that they need a new digital aeriel?

Cheers guys. smile

There's no such thing as a digital aerial, that part doesn't change. I've a feeling the original Freeview tuners may not work with the latest transmissions so they may need to invest in a new tuner.

You can pick up Freeview receivers for bugger all nowadays but it's a good opportunity to get one that can pick up Freeview HD. Or better still, one that can receive HD and record too smile

Hmmmmm that's annoying if that's the case as their tuner is built-in. However, they were hinting at getting a new flat screen tv anyway! Ha!

Now I think of it, when I popped round last week to retune, I did get a couple of digital channels such as ITV4 and Dave, but none of the regular 1,2,3,4,5 etc... Would this indicate that the tuner is too old?

It could be that the ariel needs adjusting.

They switched off all the analogue signals down here in the South West several years ago and there really wasnt a problem, most people have Freeview these days and a quick re-tune and it's all done, I didn't notice any difference.

We're supposed to get a stronger signal now they've turned analogue off at Sandy Heath but C4 & C5 are still pants. Digital seems a bit meh unless the weather is spot on irked

My mother lives right on the fringes of SH & is complaining about her TV picture everytime I talk to her!

If you're getting your signal from Ridge Hill they will be turning the wick up from 2kW to 10-20kW, meaning you're reception should improve somewhat.

You'll only get more channels if you aren't getting the full complement at the moment.

Nah we're on the Wrekin and seem to get pretty much all the channels I believe. Was just wondering if it would improve somehow.

Our switch off was last week, signal strength up hugely. Picture appears better.
HD is excellent.
You will probably need to do a full reset rather than a retune, at least i did and after reading up its not unusual.

Looking here it states your power is also eight times greater, so you may benefit from that at least.

Yeah there is a noticable difference in the signal now, especially on TVs not plugged into the main aerial.

As far as my grandparents' telly is concerned, just finished installing a new Freeview box and it works perfectly. Suspect that their in-built box was of the 'old type' and can't receive the new signal.

We swapped across last year, once the analogue signal was switched off and the digital signal turned up to full power, we noticed a massive improvement in the quality of the picture. A lot less pixellating. wink

What if you have neither cable or a freeview box? Does this mean you can have an old telly to watch DVDs on but you don't have to pay the licence? Conveniently the webs(h)ite doesn't seem to consider this option.

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Same here, are you on the south coast? It really is daft that they haven't sorted it out yet, not even Channel 5.

wow, a pretty serious power increase, do they have the dyno sheet to back those claims up, or is it all just pub talk?? biggrin

No west Yorkshire. We get digital next year I think.

Is there any difference between analogue and digital transmission? I notice that when I'm watching an analogue channel - BBC1 for instance and then switch to it's digital equivalent, there's one second of a delay between the two. The digital transmission is actually slower than analogue. Odd, since radio waves travel at lightspeed. Explanations anyone?
