I have just discovered to my complete shock and disgust that we have a Labour mayor! irked

Our council has 38 councillors. Of these, 26 are from the Residents' Association, 6 are Lib Dems, and the Conservatives and Labour have 3 each.

So how the fk do we end up with a Mayor from a party with less than 10% of the councillors????

They are nominated and then decided in the first council meeting.

Need to serve for 8 years first.

In a case like this surely he's just a figurehead like a chairman of a council and serves for a year.

One of the last bastions of the old boys club, and what benefit do these people bring to the local community. Its all complete and utter outdated and unwanted bull IMO.

I do actually think that the Lord Mayor of York, although a purely ceremonial role, is quite good to have a contact point for someone from the council to attend charity events across the city and also to represent the City of York at various functions. Rather than having someone employed for this as a full time job.

The Lord Mayor also chairs council meetings, so would still carry on with this.

My own experiences (as Joe Public) tend to make me somewhat cynical of these do-gooders swanning around in ermine with a oversize bling necklace which says 'look at me, I'm important'. Don't forget all of this nonsense comes from the public purse, including the posh car and chauffeur normally provided, and the lunches and meals and champagne quaffed. Ceremonial events should have been banished years back and its vital now that they are.
Not for me thanks, ditch all of this outdated rubbish and let ordinary everyday people continue charity work at their expense, not the public expense.

It is a shame they get such bad press.

Posh Car - Lord Mayor of York a 10 year Old Vectra on lease.
Chauffeaur - Part time and pooled
Lunches/Meals/Champagne Quaffed - Budget of £17,000 throughout the year on all events is very minor. This is to host businesses events for a variety of things and charity events. The business side is important way to introduce new business to York. It is very unlikely you will find any champagne at any Lord Mayor hosted event.

Role- They are their to chair the Council and be the face of the council. Sign off any legal document as a result of council changes.

Just because you don't like and think they cost a small fortune, the roles they perform would be done by several people and ultimately cost more.
