How does a military coup work? Do the army just march into the main man's house and say "you're not in charge any more, we are"?
Judging by what happens in Turkey a few months back, you need the people to either want the main man out, be indifferent to change or be willing to shoot to kill and have the manpower and equipment to subdue...

Turkey's coup fell appeared to fall apart as the public stood up against the army.

In Turkey the army used occasionally to depose the government and restore the Ataturk consensus, and then return to barracks. Last year the army was purged after what may have been a fake coup, so this does not happen anymore.

In Ghana in the 70s the military intervened to restore civil government. They went back to barracks, but came out a second time and stayed out for a while.

On this occasion in Zimbabwe I assume the army will act according to Chinese policy. I may be wrong and hope I am.

It looks very much you are right Breadvan, China has much need of the materials in Africa.

What is a shame is that with the Chinese methods, there really is very little for the locals, due to the nature of African politics the masses are expendable and kept down, so very little chance of uprising.

As I linked on the other thread, before someone in a Moderators uniform appeared and announced that it wasn't a thread any more....some interesting background from late last year:

Also, noted that General Chiwenga was in Beijing last week. scratchchin

Thank you, read it when you posted it.

Seems that China's empire/economic aims, are seen by some, both internal to China and external, Africa has a few past cases of upsetting it's aid providers..

Developing that, what's to stop Joe Masimba* wandering in and just saying "I need your clothes, your boots and your key to the front door"? In that scenario do the military then back the government?

I'm clearly no expert, but I would have thought Presidential Palace, Parliament, military barracks and TV/radio stations would all be on the list of places you need to get your hands on. Maybe the central bank as well? Frederick Forsyth's The Dogs of War is a good read on planning a (albeit fictional) coup.

Country that size I think you are talking year of planning to do a proper job. Negotiate with other counties, get people on side, build up the psyops side of things. Do a half hearted job and its going to fail and that does not end well for anyone...in the past people have tried to buy contractors to do the job, which usually fails. These things usually need the assistance of an outside government who can keep everything on the QT as there is not as much of an issue with people blabbing. Then there is the issue of the money, because these things cost a lot.

as pwr Butter face has said the army are the ones who decide who rules. The fact the african union do not support or recognise military change to rule but are ok with rigged elections and violence against the opposition is fine lol.

I wonder how any one in Zimbabwe could support a man who has destroyed the wealth of the country. the war for independence was 37 years ago an since then the country has just got worse yet Mugabe's support has remained. crazy world.
Because africa, because tribal.

The Army let Mugabe attend a graduation ceremony today where he presented students with their degrees. One of the students was the wife of General Constantino Chiwenga - the army chief who toppled Mugabe. How bizarre.

The army has to tread carefully because Mugabe still has popular support, and apparently even they may revere him as the claimed father of the nation.

If it means a bloodless transition of power and avoiding civil war, then in the wider view I’m happy for him to disappear to Singapore until his demise.

Always better that way, as with Idi Amin. If only Saddam Hussein and Bashar Al Assad had been persuaded to retire to some safe haven and keep their stolen cash, many lives would have been saved.

Singapore's a nice place. Why allow a piece of excretia such as Mugabe besmirch it?

Lol. Don't you just love African politics.

Mugabe says 'I'm staying, wibble wibble, ftang, ftang' and all the army generals get up and shake his hand.

Classic brown envelope moment. The guy is shameless.
