Now everyone has had a laugh at the chap's expense it's perhaps time to point out that if seafood smells fishy then it has probably been left rotting - so fair enough to complain.
Fresh fish does not smell fishy, it smells of the sea. Fish that smell fishy are at best, well past their best, or at worst, off. Crustaceans are generally alive when brought ashore, so again if dead or stinking are probably off.
And did it say anywhere that the fish was to be consumed? No. It could well have been waste fish. Fresh fish does not smell fishy, it smells of the sea. As for fish smelling of the sea, you go makeral fishing, after handling the wriggling little buggers straight from the briney you smell your hands, I guarentee they will smell as fishy as a f**k.
Your hands may smell of fish, but a tray of fresh mackerel does not stink of fish. I'm from Hull originally so was brought up in a fishing community. I used to do a st load of sea fishing - shore based, quay based, or boat based, I've even been out on working boats emptying pots and rebating them, and long lining (as a kid) so I do know what fresh fish should smell of and it ain't fishy.
But don't take my word for it:

The fish were waiting to be taken back out to sea as bait.
Good point. The claim it was a trawler could be wrong, although even so using crab as a bait is unusual to say the least given the price it attracts at the moment.rhinochopig said:

Now that's *proper* smelly.

Then it is unpleasant to leave it stinking up the quayside. People wouldn't accept it with rotting livestock in a public place.

Read back what you've written then read the article. Your hands may smell of fish, but a tray of fresh mackerel does not stink of fish. The bloke wasn't complaining about a load of 4 days old rotting fish, but complaining that the quayside smelt like, well a quayside. like ALL commercial fishing quays in the world smell like.
Its nothing to do with whether the fish are fresh or not- the smell is ingrained into the the very concrete of the quay. It can't be removed for anyone.
The bloke in the article was retarded, and the habourmaster should have told him to fk off.

This is true. One of the investment banks was planning to redevelop Old Billingsgate as its new swanky riverside HQ in the late 80s, but it proved impossible to get rid of the smell of fish. This reminds me of a past holiday to Cornwall with a lass I went out with, who owned 2 black Labs. Walking down past an empty harbour- So a large unguarded drop to the sea.
Smell something fishy- At the precise point the 2 Labs do. Some rotting fish in some nets behind a pallet. Whoomp- Both dogs run in and eat up. Go and grab them, retching from the smell. Dog 1, Alfie, runs off. Dog 2, Bess, throws up. Which wouldn't normally be a problem, but she's a dog with epilepsy. And the trigger?
Yep, throwing up. Bess runs off in a bit of a panic towards the harbour wall, I literally rugby tackle her to prevent her falling off. Major fit, during which she pisses all over herself, and me. Carried back to car.
We never did get that romantic meal that evening
