Its nothing to do with whether the fish are fresh or not- the smell is ingrained into the the very concrete of the quay. It can't be removed for anyone.
This is true. One of the investment banks was planning to redevelop Old Billingsgate as its new swanky riverside HQ in the late 80s, but it proved impossible to get rid of the smell of fish.
rubbish. It's used for corporate events now and there is no fish smell.
How long is it since the late 80s? I know it doesn't'smell any more; we had our Christmas party there a few years ago. Funnily enough, CSFB (as it then was) wasn't prepared to wait a decade or more smell to dissipate.

Don't be so ready with the cry of "rubbish".
Strangely enough, not what you actually said, was it?

"it proved impossible to get rid of the smell of fish."

I can only take you at your word. If you mean something else than what you write HTFDIK?

It proved impossible in the late 80s. Is that so difficult to comprehend?

Have you had a bad evening? If not, why so aggressive?

Not aggressive, that's your inference. Has smell reduction technology moved on in leaps and bounds then? I think not.

(if I appear aggressive it's because this comes up every day and I'm a little tired of it. Why is it so difficult for people to say what they actually mean and for that to have some basis in fact?)

Time has passed, quite a lot of time.

Does the subject of the smell of fish in stone really come up every day? I hadn't noticed.

No, but my actual point, and obtuseness, does.
