This is why he's in his job, the RMT members must love him.

50K PA for a Tube Driver, 35 hour week, 43 days PA paid leave & a substantial pay increase agreed by the bosses.

No agreement not to strike during the Olympics.

Another face I'd never get tired of punching.

Just to be clear, it's £52,000 with a RPI + 0.5% increase every year. Which, today, works out at 5.5%.

Pretty soon tube drivers will start complaining about the extortionate tax system we have in this country and that, unless something's done, they're going to all relocate to Switzerland.

They're not overpayed. It's the rest of us who are underpaid.

Their wages are increasing with INFLATION plus a tiny bit. The rest of us are getting shafted over pay. Some people get upset over being reminded of that fact.

No one has mentioned how much they think they should be paid, just moaning about what they are getting. Speak up.

Good at his job and obviously worth every penny he's paid, should be a PH hero surely?

Don't be so flippant! They have to press buttons to open and close the doors to. wink

(though on some trains they only have to do the doors and not push the stop and go buttons)

Well as far as I can tell it is not that easy, again blame the unions. They don't advertise vacancies you have to start work at London Underground at a very junior level and work you way up.

Otherwise you would be able to get people in at a "market rate" which would be considerably less than £50k given the rather low barriers to entry.

Start as a basic SA for mid to high 20's. Requirements include optional english speaking. McDonalds wouldn't employ them. TBH wouldn't want the job though i would like the wedge. 6.5 hours in the dark with nowt to do but push the button, by the way they only push the start button the stopping is automatic.
(As is most the network, always amuses me the look on folks faces when a Victoria line train comes in with the driver feet up reading the metro. FFS late 60's and fully automated).

To make that point the only crash on the DLR was when they had a 'driver' and switched the auto off!

Probably in manual mode. The auto is pretty basic on the Vic line. Analogue computing. Slow timing so quite jerky. They can overide the doors too which is why they opened on the wrong side a while back.

How much does that footballer get paid?

How much does that popstar get paid?

How much does that banker get paid?

If the hardest working people earnt the most money then coalmining children in Asia would be zillionaires and 99% of us on here would be stony broke but that's not how the world works I'm afraid.

All those people can be replaced by someone cheaper if they are just as good.

About the same as a bus driver, if they were able to let the market dictate the pay.

Its a huge salary for what is not a particularly skilled job. They can only command that salary because the workforce are holding the company to ransom, and control who does or does not get the jobs.

I'd suggest that they should get a little more than a bus driver given that they must know a fair bit about electrical and signalling systems. There is also a greater unpleasantness due to having to work underground for hours.

That said if you were able to apply directly for a tube drivers role I expect they could fill out the role adequately at around £30k.
