£1.5tln is a staggering figure but 1.25 of that linked to property debt, a market which could see values drop should interest rates need to rise before the economy is growing strongly enough.

But it does highlight why regulators restricted who banks could lend to and how much and the absolute significance of the political descision to lift these restrictions.
