The fuel duty stabiliser I meant, sorry, where is that then? is this talk of bumping up the VAT again, will we or won't we just a distraction?

fuel escalator has already been been scrapped...

they are also thinking about dropping the 3p that petrol will go up in January when VAT is raised to 20%

Where is the evidence that the Government isn't going ahead with this measure?

From the comments:

"My job was moved to a base 15 miles away, i had no say in this. There is a bus every 2 hours, so it's not an option to use this, and anyway I sometimes need to go and visit clients in an emergency, so I need a car at work, and one isn't provided. My wage hasn't gone up in 3 years. I live in the country. Would the muesli-knitting brigade care to tell me how to manage?"

Must be a PHer.

I quite like muesli

That's just evidence that the government may receive pressure to scrap plans to increase duty by a planned 3p per litre.

Let's hope it comes to something.

So we are going to see the plan to increase the tax drop roughly when we have a referendum on European membership then?

Don't worry, if the government drop the planned increase, the petrol stations will add it on anyway.

Fuel prices haven't reflected the price of oil for at least 3 years or so. As long as people pay it, they will charge it.

this is due to continual tax rises

The petrol stations make bugger all from the sale of petrol as these graphs demonstrate

Is Duty a percentage, or a fixed rate?

Can't beleive diesel is that expensive per unit either...I was under the impression it took barely any effort to refine, compared with petrol?

Every fuel has increased in price in recent years, even bottled propane gas which has doubled in price during the past seven years. And this fuel is a by-product of production!

Petrol takes more refining so should be more expensive.

It's not what it's worth.

It's what people will, and do pay.

That's supply and demand - if it's in demand (in this case, it's always in demand!), you can charge tax what you like.

If you overdo it and charge tax too much, demand drops and you lower your price tax for a bit.

Then you creep it back up until what was 'expensive' a year or so ago becomes 'cheap'.

Sheeple have short memories.

Not anymore and just think of all that demand as more and more people choose a deseasel for it's economy despite them only doing a few miles a week

Other way around - there was a time when no-one quite knew what to do will all the diesel.
