Looks like the Chinese are getting on board for the oil deal. The Chinese have been setting up shop in a lot of places since the cold war ended. Wonder what other deals they do to come help get the oil?
Given the Chinese are relatively inexperienced in offshore expro I'd imagine they will concentrate on improving the existing developed oilfields expropriated from Repsol, to start with at least. It wouldn't surprise me if the Chinese ended up bringing in the likes of BP, Chevron etc. as partners to get the offshore bit going; no doubt the oil revenue and chinese money would keep Kirchner quiet. The amount of money, manpower and hardware needed to start producing oil from a virgin subsea oilfield is vast and more than one company can cope with, never mind hedge the risk for.
I was thinking more along the lines of what other baggage do you get when you get into bed with the Chinese today. I understand they can be quite helpful, maybe a bit of advice and material help as well. I think they will be looking after themselves and a bit of trouble and strife for us, well, you can only egg on a desperate President so far.

China has been buying up some of the expertise they'll need - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-bus...

The usual bluster; Venezuela can't even maintain their own oilfields, let alone explore, develop and produce from deepsea fields in a hostile environment 4000 miles from home using techniques they have no experience of, funded with money they don't have and cannot borrow from anyone.

I wonder if the team GB loss to Argentina in the Hockey this evening will be used often in the anti-british rhetoric.

Kirschner aides admit Falklands hot air is a smokescreen. I realise we all knew that, but hey even they're admitting it now.

The Spanish will invade Argentina over their hijacking of Spanish business assets before we do anything, oh no wait. they've already done that before in 1527.

Christina could garner some useful political capital out of this. The holding of their ship will be hurting the argies national pride deeply. She would become a heroine if she authorised an operation to get it back. I would not be surprised if they were plannning to send a small party of sf to cut her mooring lines and sail her out. They have already asked for her to be refueled. It would be a great national pride boost and they wont be bothered about pissing off Ghana. I hope they go for it!

High risk, though, if they go for it, and screw it up, that's her gone.

Pretty much the kind of thing that Galteri had to deal with in 82!

Yep. I hope they do it though. A classic 'cutting-out' operation!

Invade and undertake a military operation in a Commonwealth country, a member of the United Nations, the African Union and perhaps more ironically a member of the South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone.

It would end Kirschner's presidency (which is a good thing) but it would also ruin any relations they have and any trade with Africa. Ghana would probably call for a UN resolution to stop trade links with Argentina.

Yep would be a good publicity stunt with little downside other than upsetting the Ghanans, that said they could quite easily hunt her down and recapture her, Ghana's Navy has a few well armed fast patrol boats.
