Gerald Ronson's CBE
Discussion
I passed one of the dreadful papers (Wail or express) that had a predictable "Isn't it awful" headlines about this.
My own view is that the guy has made his money the hard way and given a great deal of it and of his time to charity. He has acknwledged his guilt in the Guinness affair, been tried & justly punished, thereby paying his debt to society and, as such, richly deserves his honour.
What do others think?

He's a rogue just like the other three.

Saunders was suggested by doctors at Ford Open Prison to possibly be suffering from premature Alzheimer's Disease, a common form of dementia; if this was a correct diagnosis, he made a recovery unique in medical history.
It should have been given to Earnest Saunders (one of Ronson's co-conspirators) for his contribution to the understanding of Alzheimer's Disease.

Predictable headline in the Wail or Express?
Predictable Honours awards imo.
Sends out all the right messages, eh?
Of all the deserving people in this country it gives an ex-jailbird a gong (I seem to remember Lester Piggot lost his for going to jail, does he get his back now?), and one to Denise Coates, founder and chief executive of the online gambling company bet365
...for 'her Services to the community'!!!
Happy New Year to all. Pathetic.

Still sends out the wrong message imo, reformed or otherwise, he was still a fraudster.
As I said before, how about giving Lester Piggot his dong back then?
Just looked through the list of honours and at least one very highly-talented Brit got a Knighthood.
His designs had impact worldwide but he doesn't get enough mention. He felt 'humbled'. He shouldn't.
Jonathan Ive.
Steve Jobs got all the plaudits, but it was this ingenious Brit who was the designer.

It definitely said in the Telegraph that Ronson had maintained his innocence in the Guiness events even though he has served his time etc.
As regards whether he should be awarded his CBE due to his work for charity its a difficult one. Theres also questions over a one time drug taker in London who has reformed and done good works for the yoputh in London and been awarded in the Honours list.
To an extent its also linked to the news the other day that something like 30% of the unemployed have a criminal record.
If we want to encourage people to reform and input into society at some point we have to forgive any previous errors otherwise where is the incentive for them to reform? Its like all the rioters, yes they are being punished in courts of law and yed that might discourage others in the future but have we now created a huge number of people who will never get jobs?
So I think on balance that Ronson is entitled to his award but it is good evryone is being reminded of his involvement in the Guiness affair. I never knew he was involved, and come to that am not sure what it involved!

The thing is there many ex cons gone good and redeemed themselves who never get a sniff of an honour.
Who does he have onside to be different, and why?
That makes no sense at all.Who does he have onside to be different, and why?
IT is like saying there are many people who eat spinach, but many do not turn into popeye.
The two really aren't related to the philanthropy work they do, which is what the honours list is rewarding them for.
The list of ex-convicts getting honours is a very very long one.

What next?
Sir "Mad" Frankie Frazer?
Lord Charlie Richardson of Camberwell?
Bruce Reynolds MBE (services to the railway industry)?
Lord Jeffrey Archer?
Hang on a minute...........
Honours are a joke. They mean so little. We have a chap who gave half a million ot the tories and he's got his reward. Labour sold honours following on from the great traditions of their predecessors. Every now and again there's one that is deserved but they are lost in the cloud of actors, sportsmen and women, and those who've worked for a few years in the civil service.Sir "Mad" Frankie Frazer?

Some awards are made just to stick two fingers up at the rest of us. There is Wilson's secretary and the bloke who pushed the M4 bus lane, the most heaviliy criticised and ridiculed initiative ever. I remember a Top Gear where they got a camera feed of the empty lane.
What gets me is why anyone should think they are worth buying. The cost is very high and you would think that if they had that much money they would have some sense or at least self respect.
There are men who can kick, hit or run with a ball who have been knighted, and some demand that the title be used.
This New Year it would appear that one at least has got an award for restraining himself from taking other people's money for a few years. Well done.
What gets me is that Archer is made a lord and the women who had dedicated her life to the St John's Ambulance got some obscure gong. That said, I hope, and expect, that she felt much more rewarded than Archer.
Honours are a farce for everyone except those who deserve them.

If everyone did this then the system would work a lot better. Which tory donor was given his rewards then?

Why stick to just the tories?Doug Ellis, James Wates and James Lupton = £370,000 to the tory coffers.
The point is that it has been going on for years making the whole procedure pointless.
Newey has a CBE. Good for him and I hope he enjoys it.

No wonder our Governments get away with so much.
And by the way, if we all nominated someone we thought 'deserving of it' (not that I can think of anyone) it wouldn't make a jot of difference. The awards would still be handed out for the same old establishment reasons.

I have nominated a couple of people who have received honours. It can mean a hell of a lot to someone who has been doing charity work, volunteer work, etc and going well above and beyond their duty.
If everyone did the same then they would get honoured, you are very naive if you think that it is just friends of the government get honours.
