Only 1km from a main road?

I knwo moving about on snow is hard but even I could manage 1km. what gear did he have in his car? i would have though people in those countries are a little more prepared.

It's absolutely bizarre to my mind.

Yes you can be on some roads deep in the forest and not have a bloody clue where you are, but I've been told that he must have known he was close to the main road, ie it was a dead end apparently, but just reporting what been told.

Also within phone coverage allegedly.

Plus he was somewhat prepared even for a puffy sarfener. :/professional Northerner:

But then I can't preach, nearly got tucked up by hypothermia myself on Friday night, still a bit shocked by that experience tbh, just missed the signs as I was busy.

i'm surprised if he could last that long. I was taught the rule of threes in the forces.....

3 minutes without air
3 days without water
3 weeks without food

Its not a fixed rule, but its right in most cases.

OK getting more info now, was found in Skogsvägen which is a short 1.5km dead end forest track 10km north of Umeå, and accessed from the E4. The E4 is the equivalent of the A1 in the UK, so frequent traffic.

Skogsvägen has not been ploughed since the big snowfall in December and there were no wheeltracks in between his SUV and the road.

He is not wanted, suspected of anything nor reported missing but is known in his home town to be in the mire financially. Acquaintances from his home town are not surprised when they heard the news.

So clearly he could have got to the main road and got help, just seems he didn't want to.

eek

Saw this.

Presumably the incredible cold slowed his metabolism down enough to make it possible to survive.

Can people who've been in that state make a full recovery without any ongoing issues - anybody know?

I'm guessing that he got stuck at the start of a snow storm and thought it prudent to stay in the car until the storm passed before getting out and walking back to the road etc. Except that when the storm stopped he was buried and couldn't open the doors. Maybe in addition the battery was flat so the windows wouldn't open.

It seems a little odd that the person wouldn't eventually kick the glass and dig to the surface.

There is a chance that he is a bit thick?

This is the local English paper report.

http://www.thelocal.se/39204/20120220/

Little bit more in Svenska Dagbladet, basically a very small time Propertaaay developaaah who got into debt but only 1.4 million sek, broke up with partner and couldn't handle it all, allegedly.

If you are going to kill yourself then a rather poor way to do it is park up a disused forest track, kit yourself up with some drinks, small amount of grub, stuff to keep you warm, and reading matter to keep amused.

Nah! No further action, file in drawer marked tt.

Surely the sensible thing would be dig yourself out of the car and then dig the car out, say within a few hours.

I'f I'd have found him, I'd have gone and made a tin foil outfit, stuck a coat hanger out of my hat, and pretended I was from the FUTURE!

Wouldn't the warmth of the car melt any snow if the engine was running?

Slowest suicide attempt ever. Hanging? Nah. Overdose? Don't think so. Park up in a snow drift for a few months, that's the one for me!
