Whitehall this morning.

Jeremy Hunt's office.

Hunt: Well somebody authorised the fking email?

Adam Smith: The identity of the official whose alleged responsibility for this hypothetical oversight has been the subject of recent discussion is not shrouded in quite such impenetrable obscurity as certain previous disclosures may have led you to assume; but not to put too fine a point on it, the individual in question is, it may surprise you to learn, one whom your present interlocutor is in the habit of defining by means of the perpendicular pronoun.

Hunt: I beg your pardon?

Smith: It was... I.

Hunt: Well you know what you must do.

Smith: Yes minister.

That's the way it is these days. Ministers don't instantly fall on their swords anymore. They try to get as many underlings to fall on their's first.

And they still can't understand why the general public is losing faith in them.

Often, it just postpones the inevitable though.
