Dishonest means you deliberately tell untruths. I got the feeling that Brown always believed every word he said. No matter how ridiculous.
Well if that's the case, he is mentally ill.
Even if he is mentally ill he won't be the first person to be so and suffering from a mental illness, be it severe depression or bipolar disorder doesn't necessarily make him a liar or an unreliable witness.

Some of the criticism Brown has had is just needlessly cruel and totally unfair on him as a human being, putting aside any fair criticism anyone might have of him as a politician or a private citizen.

If mental illness makes him unable to tell the truth then he has (or had) no place in public life, never mind being PM.

That isn't true though is it? That's being silly.

Not silly at all, the man clearly has mental health issues, and has clearly been delusional about the truth in the past, I would say unfit for office, as would some of his peers.

The 'black dog' alone does not make people unfit for office. He was still in touch with reality. Brown's problems are far deeper.

Somehow I don't think we'll be looking back at Brown's time in office in 70 years time and remarking what a great leader he was. In fact even his own party seem quite keen to forget him now and even keener that the rest of us forget him. In the meantime his constituents just think he's forgotten them.

Says you, a man on the internet.

None of us here are Brown's GP or Psychiatrist and none of us know how he was affected by his daughter dying, the diagnosis of CF in his son or the pressure of the job and being screwed over by Blair.

For the record I'm no great fan of Brown's performance as PM or how he conducted himself with his staff while in office but I know a lynch-mob mentality when I see it and some of the unfair criticism of Brown has been quite ugly.

Well said.

To read most people's comments on here you'd think that Brown was a combination of Beelzebub, Pol Pot and Fred West.

I'm afraid this sort of blinkered nonsensical hatred is the reason that I rarely venture into this section of PH.

So who is the liar? Ex PM Brown or ex-editor of the Scum?

Both of them are proven liars.

The black dog may or may not have been clinical depression or he might have been bi-polar. The idea that the judgement someone with 'just' clinical is far from the truth. It is a mental illness and one which distorts perception.

Churchill may or may not have been a great war leader. His performance as PM is considerably less assured. Whilst many histories do suggest Churchill won the war by talking it up, there are dissenting voices. Certainly my family felt he was not that bothered by how many deaths he caused.

For anyone who has genuinely studied Churchill, the man and his actions, he is clearly a very complicated character with immense flaws who over a period of sixty odd years made many highly questionable decisions and displayed curious character traits that in a more invasive and less respectful media age would likely see him atleast challenged to a very high degree.

I'd suggest an uncomplicated myth has developed around him in the sixty odd years since WW2 and rarely are his flaws even considered by the masses (certainly the British masses). He's a "goodie" what won the war. For many that's enough.

We're somewhat heading off topic, though!

Two things about Brown today.

Firstly, I don't believe he told a single truth.

Secondly, I'm not entirely convinced he is aware of this.

I think he is mentally ill. He has wasted his entire life with an intent drive to change Britain into a utopian state of equality that his mind cannot cope with the abject waste and failure he has made of his life and is protecting itself from reality by operating within a wholly delusional state.

His entire political career he was a dishonest, driven, violent, angry zealot. I believe that since 08 he is a genuinely broken wreck.
