Is anyone bored with EVO magazine recently?
Discussion
Over the last few editions, for me, there seems to be a dip in interest generally. I'm also skipping certain pages especially those containing Jethro Bovingdons very drab and boring reviews-stroke-features. The only decent writers on the mag are Henry Catchpole, Harry Metcalfe and Nick Trott. For me, Henry Catchpole stand's out with his excellent road trip encounters, and more recently, the hidden writing talents of Nick Trott.
Is it time for them to bring in fresh writing talent? (maybe re-hire Chris Harris?)
Bored, love the mag?

I'm sure there are other threads similar to this but yes, I stopped buying it a few months ago. The excitement of a new had issue waned as I realised most of the cars and features didn't interest me anymore - it was a tough thing to do ( etc) as I'd been getting it since issue 7. At least I can browse the old issues and console myself with cars I have a chance of affording...
Its just as good as it ever was. Don't understand what all the moaning is about. Fast Fleet has reverted to a mix of new and old cars, the series of articles comparing different eras of classic cars like V12 Ferraris and , this month, 911s are fantastic. Honestly, what else do you want them to do?
And reading about cars you can only dream about rather than realistically aspire to is the essence of Car mags surely?
Be very boring if it restricted itself to cars under £40 grand for example. I'm in my late 40s now and I'm lucky enough to be able to afford some fabulous toys but it doesn't stop me from wanting to know what a Veyron or a Zonda is like. And when I was 20 and could aspire to second hand 205 GTi , I still loved reading about 959s and 288 GTOs.
Just don't understand the negativity.

Subscribed to Evo for donkeys years. Admittedly, I can't seem to get on with the current issue. Just can't be bothered with it for some reason. However, it's usually an excellent read and I'm sure it'll be back on form next month. Still look forward to
It arriving after all these years.
Also buy Autocar and Octance and again, cannot imagine not buying them!

A very timely thread as I have just cancelled my subscription which started for me at issue 2 after being blown away by how good the first issue was. As far as I'm concerned as a long term reader they have completely lost what the magazine was always about, whether this ties in with Nick Trott taking over as Editor I don't know.
The latest issue was the final straw for me and after the inital scan it has sat neglected and unread, as a car (and car magazine) enthusiast that proves to me they have got it very wrong. As ever it is all subjective and I'm sure plenty of Phers think it is great, but for me I'm out and not returning.
Sorry EVO it was great while it lasted but you are a shadow of your former self and think you should look hard at what you are publishing.

I've thought it went down the crapper years ago and stopped my subscription not long after coming to that conclusion. Any time I've had a look at it since, nothing in it has made me change my opinion. Also feel the same about F1 Racing, it seems to be going downhill over the last few months. Maybe have to give it the heave ho as well.
Hit & miss at the moment, more hit than miss but the lead story in their best of British main story, the new range rover?
As that what constitutes an "evo" car these days?
Chasing the average car mag buyer I suspect which is a shame as there are already enough mags that cover that dwindling sector.
Never thought I'd say it but I'm preferring octane these days, but when evo get it right, their articles are head & shoulders above the rest.

Their photography is great, but their content these days is frankly poor. Perhaps constant exposure to thrilling drives in the world's most exotic cars, without having to pay to upkeep these vehicles has dulled their passion.
The idea of seeing a Ferrari, even an older one like a 355, would be a head turning event worth getting excited about - you don't see that many supercars on the streets of Newcastle, and the best I've driven in a Ferrari 360, which was a heart-pounding, invigorating and truly amazing experience. I expect if the EVO team drove one, they'd probably think it was dull, common and underpowered, and go back to being unexcited about the latest Zonda or Koenigsegg.

Evening Dblue. You seem to be in the minority. I gave up on my Evo subscription at least four years ago. Up until then I was like you, every issue purchased and read cover to cover within 24 hours. Without fail. Then slowly but surely I noticed the features were lacking any real substance. Bovvington and Harris didn't do the magazine any favours IMHO (though Bovington has matured and can write some good stuff) Stuff that reminds me of how Meaden and Barker used to write in their early days. Their features allowed you to really understand the subtle nuances of the cars they tested. Back in the good old days when Barker and Meaden were at the helm of the cars and the pens, Evo was a decent read. Not so now.

For you maybe, but not for all.Dblue said:

Not sure anyone is suggesting they should limit the cars they test to less than £40K. But there's definitely a limit to how many roadtests I can read about million pound supercars. Just don't understand the negativity.
I read a piece Mr Harris wrote about some 1100hp behemoth Koenigsegg in Evo fairly recently. It read like something he'd written in a spare ten minutes whilst waiting to board his return flight. Seemingly I'm not alone in thinking this as someone else wrote this on a forum :
Hopefully something more objective than Chris Harris' review on EVO last year
High praise indeed !
You're appearing a tad blinkered when it comes to Evo. Whilst there might not be anything better out there currently, that doesn't make it good.

That's why I read Motorsport/Octane/C≻ I have lost interest in current hot hatches, hypercars, thumping-diesels. It is my boredom with those kinds of car which has fuelled my boredom of Evo; I don't aspire to own any of them. They have produced some very memorable features, they have featured my dream cars but now what? Can I expect them to re-feature items they've covered once, twice, maybe three times already (a lady)? No, I move on and get my automotive magazine fix elsewhere.
It just so happens that a lot of the cars they featured in the past that I enjoyed reading about are now more attainable, it wasn't a slur on the value of the cars they feature.
