a total war chest of £350k. Which is enough for a ex-council 2-bed in a crappy part of Zone 4.
Or a 4-bed detached where I live. We have electric lights here, too.One might even spend less than half that for a 3 bed semi in a pleasant area with trees & clean air. There is a whole world outside London.
Not necessarily in Notting Hill (£1.5m for a 1-bed) of course.
Live in Chester now and on lows 40s I feel my money would go a lot further than 100k in London and actually far prefer the quality of life I have. London is great for a weekend but living there from experience was terrible.

NW London?. Willesden, harrow or Harlesden?. No thanks you're ok
I drive through the latter almost every day. (through the night, actually). It's an absolute disgrace of a place.
How anyone can claim we don't have an immigration problem after seeing that place is beyond me.
There's not a single white British person there. It's an absolute dump.

Not sure whether you actually meant what you said here... What is the immigration problem that this observation identifies? It's an absolute disgrace of a place.

Agree completly don't see the appeal of London at all did it for 12 months (Canada Water) and hated it far too busy and stressful and ludicrously expensive. As a young person (just turned 25) they is no way I could live there and buy a decent property or start a family even on for example 120k a year you would be stuck with a poxy tiny flat or a 2/3 bed terrace and a massive commute to work I don't see the point of it all.

That's quite interesting, i grew up in Chester and once i graduated spent some time working in Liverpool, Poole, Birmingham and then finally London where i've stayed put, i'm only a couple of years older than you but i feel that London is great for me at this age, both from a social and career perspective. However Chester is a great place so i'm sure you'll love living there.Live in Chester now and on lows 40s I feel my money would go a lot further than 100k in London and actually far prefer the quality of life I have. I've just bought a place in South London (my username probably gives a hint as to specific location), further out than i was previously renting but i really like the area, has a good community feel, good pubs, can get out to surrey countryside quite easily and is still an easy 30 mins to the office in London Bridge/ The City which only gets busy once i hit zone 2 which i don't mind at all. I think you didn't get the best view of London living in Canada Water but equally there are "Cooler" (see: grottier and worse) places you could have lived
I love the North West and will definitely move back up that way in 5-10 years, but in living in London i'll (hopefully) have set myself up career wise and thoroughly enjoyed my 20s!
On the house price front, i was sick of paying someone else's mortgage but couldn't bring myself to pay 750,000 for a two bed, i'll admit i've still paid a nuts amount (from a non-London perspective) on a pretty standard flat that i'll be happy with whilst i'm here but short of the housing market literally turning upside down that should get me a nice place for the move back to more Northerly climes so i'm not planning anything based on my flat going up in value at this stage.
I was born in West London and lived there until my late 20's. My childhood to early 20's spent in pre gentrified Hammersmith and Fulham, then 5 years in Chiswick ( a lovely town). I loved living in London and there were plenty of opportunities to get ahead. At 30 moved to the Chilterns and love this area. The population of the local towns is growing apace and of course we have plenty of Londoners selling their hugely expensive London properties to buy the top end property locally. London is a much more exciting city now than when I lived there, but at my age I prefer the relative quite and clean air of where I am. My gf works in Canary Wharf and she lives in sarf London - she loves the social facilities and buzz of the place. It's a shame that people who have spent time in the grottier areas of the city, now have a negative attitude to the whole. London is World Class and its hugely diverse population is a great asset to the UK.

I love the arrogance of this place. I assume you're making the trite implication that anything outside Zone 1 isn't 'London'?
Canada Water / Canary Wharf is hardly representative of London, regardless of whether it's Zone 1 or 2. There isn't much to do around there because it's a relatively new development to the East of the City and still looks like a huge identikit shopping mall. Whereas there is sh8t loads to do in the West End & the City - spent most of my life there and still get a buzz heading into work, but just feel numb when visiting Canary Wharf.z4RRSchris said:

I love it around there - not sure i'd want to live around there (too old for Shoreditch) but it's a great place to work. What aspect of it don't you like?Edited by fido on Monday 24th April 19:06
Having been through Canada Water/East India a bit in recent times, there is not a chance I would want to live there, much like Stratford, huge open areas of not a lot.
I was surprised at just how reasonable you can get somewhere in W1 if you wanted. I've debated doing it for a bit, and you can live in Fitzrovia for not utterly silly cash, if you wanted to 'do' London then there are a lot of places you'd look before Canada Water I think!

Oh yeah, £340k to live in a 2 bed flat until 2024 when the freeholder either rapes you for an extension or takes it off you.Seems a steal...

I assume he means renting not buying?
Actually both.I found some alright 1 beds around where my office in Great Portland St is for around 600, which will sound idiotic to some, but as a locations go its pretty close to everything. They're not amazing flats, but they're eqaully not anywhere near as I imagined they would be. Of course its double if you want a shiny one.
