Comrade Corbyn was a friend of P.I.E back in the day and thought it was unfair that they were taken to court.

More than a little worrying that it wasn't until 2013 before grooming was a consideration in referrals to social care.

Concerning figures for Gloucestershire and Surrey too - these seem to be areas not mentioned previously.

Agreed. The authorities were all, to varying degrees, a long (decades) way behind the curve on this. Some areas were really slow on the uptake.

My view for some time has been the initial cases - in the North - were merely the top of the iceberg. I also feel that links to the (now very much mainstream) County Lines investigation were more important and prevalent than first understood. Overlapping subsets of a broader picture of a use and criminal intent

County lines has only been a policing priority for a few years as far as I can see on the news. These grooming gang stories have been going on a lot longer. And before the recent trend of Pakistani / Bangladeshi male gangs was reported on, the abuse in care homes seems even more grim as these were institutions set up to look after the most vulnerable of all and it would appear that pedophiles would specifically go to work there to prey on these poor children.

I don’t think the political will was there to do anything before - just sweep it under the carpet, or vested interests between police and councils perhaps. That’s the flavour I get reading about it now

With the Asian gangs there was possibly political correctness preventing some from acting but how much of a factor that was I don’t know. It’s clear that a great many people and agencies didn’t help so it can’t just be that.

Grooming is not a new phenomenon but has only been defined in law recently. The first grooming laws I believe are about 15 years old. Digital laws are more recent. So it is not necessarily something that has been properly understood for a long time - As an example on the Epstein thread someone said the 17 year old victim was smiling in that photo with Andrew. As such she was not a victim. The understanding of coercion and control in exploitation is obviously what it could be

With this in mind I think a lot of these now shocking earlier cases were probably looked at as not prosecutable as they may have predated a fuller understanding of grooming by the cps or police and as such the police would have said they were consensual, not in public interest to prosecute or likely to suceed etc

Just my thoughts as a layman and casual observer and as always very happy to be wrong.

They’re 100% perverts if found guilty.

Good to see that historic stuff like this is being pursued and prosecuted.

I can't find the bit in the BBC article quoted where it gives their nationalities, so I'd have assumed that they're all Brits.

Newsnight particularly shocking.

Rochdale social services still refusing to cooperate.
This activity is still ongoing.
Care system still a shambles.
Governmental research on cultural problems within the Pakistani community unpublished (though there was plenty of indication that it was not restricted to that community from the profile of those so far convicted).
Lack of budget/resources for this.

I suspect we’ll be seeing this effluent a decade from now unless these are addressed.
