Popes no longer profess to believe in Adam and Eve although the Garden of Eden still has a fair bit of support.
So where does original sin come from? If Jesus died for our sins, why do we still have original sin? What was the scapegoat sacrifice that wasn't for, exactly?

Isn't the original sin the search for knowledge? Education undermines superstition.

Historically the church has limited the spread of education amongst the plebs. The only form of study was the study of the bible so therefore there was little chance of it being overturned. Indeed, don't forget it was a mortal sin to read a copy of the bible in English for many years.

King James' leap into print was a major slap in the face for the pope. It upset him. Jimmy was highly religious so there is a certain irony in the fact that his big plan to convert the population to protestantism is largely responsible for the rise of atheism. Once the plebs, whom they were milking for tithes, started to realise what the bible actually said there was an inexorable move towards doubt.

Sorry, but no. Check out the Roman Catholic catechism - The official guide to the Roman Catholic belief system and not open to negotiation or any kind of 'interpretation' - It's all clear as day:

Or, here for the abridged version:

Old testament is a completely valid text I'm afraid. Genesis, the great flood, original sin, all of it. OT hasn't been superseded by NT at all, you've just made that bit up for yourself.

As you probably know, Catholicism doesn't work like that - You're either in or you're out. And if you're out, then be damned to a fiery hell for all eternity. Sorry if I've messed up anybody's plans for after they die.

Hold on. We're talking about Christianity the one minute and then applying Catholic catechisms the next. The whole of Christendom is most certainly not defined by Catholicism and its beliefs.
Except the thread title mentions the head of the Catholic church and the story linked to in the OP is also about Catholic clergy.

My mum has a picture of me with Jimmy Saville at a charity event. She also has a picture of me when I was commissioned a Eucharistic minister by Cardinal O'Brian (then archbishop). Should I be worried?

Depends on whether you feel able to sue anyone or not.

Not sure if quit or sacked...

Approaching the age of 75 and at times in indifferent health, I tendered my resignation as archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh to Pope Benedict XVI some months ago. I was happy to know that he accepted my resignation "nunc pro tunc" – (now – but to take effect later) on 13 November 2012. The Holy Father has now decided that my resignation will take effect today, 25 February 2013

I should have put a smile at the end of my post - it is a source of amusement in our family at the moment that I seem to be the common denominator smile
