Summary?
Westerners come along and attempt to train people with medieval values how to be "like us" within 10 minutes and it fails.
Westerners watch TV programme and are shocked that other people are not "like us".
Westerners (Politicians) suggest spending more money we dont have on overseas aid/support/waste-funds. Stupid people go aaahh they must be nice I will vote for them...
Western world explodes!
Americans still might save the day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhnUgAaea4M (NSFW turn up loud!)

Unfortunately it was completely predictable from the off.
You can't just suddenly build a nation, that takes generations. The Taliban can just sit back and crack open a beer (possibly not) and wait for the foreigners to leave.
Whatever (miniscule) chance there was that the Taliban might have sat down and agreed to some sort of settlement was lost when our wonderous Politicians openly announced that we would be leaving in 2014 in order to buy a few votes. You can't just suddenly build a nation, that takes generations. The Taliban can just sit back and crack open a beer (possibly not) and wait for the foreigners to leave.
They now know they just have to cross the days off on the calender. The current Afghan regime will 'flee' to Switzerland to count their money and the people of that country will just get on with it and continue their tribal existence.
I've just watched this on iplayer. Shocking, but not suprising. I cannot get over the behaviour of the majority of the ANA.
Not one of them seems to give even a modicum of a fk. Its as if it is all a big game. I take my hat off to the american marines tasked with trying to teach these fkwits anything, it must be demoralising seeing all your hard work go to waste, as on the next op the ANA spray all their ammunition into the sky.
i've no doubt that as soon as the troops leave afghanistan it will be back in taliban hands again.

I cannot understand the need to foist "democracy" on states such as Afghanistan; they don't work like that.
And why do we continue to treat Pakistan with such kid gloves(because this country is heaving with them?)(because they have nukes) when it is evident that they knowing aid and harbour AQ/Taliban and train up young men from UK northern towns to be terrorists? Utter pariah state.

The problem with the Afghan Army is that it lacks enough Pashtuns, who are the main ethnic group in the Taliban and in the country. Panorama alluded to this when they said many of the policemen and soldiers can't even speak the local language. The Afghan Army seems to be a de-facto Northern Alliance full of Uzbeks and Tajiks. Groups who the Taliban loathe.
And to think we're helping to pay for these circus clowns.

Tribal loyalty far outweighs loyalty to any Nation.Gassing Station | News, Politics & Economics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
