I had visions of him running across a wasteland and being shot from a distance but it seems he pretty much drove up with the NK army just behind him.

One of them did cross the border then quickly turned around. I assume as he didnt want to get shot by SK and/or didnt want their family to spend the rest of their years being tortured?

Still, given that the soldiers didnt stop him from defecting, they are probably being fed to the pigs or whatever anyway for being useless...
