Surely there was a high risk of destroying the money in this method?

Offtopic but what the hell has that Gemma Massey done to herself (video on the right)? Christ, there's an advert against plastic surgery if ever I saw one.

This reminds me of the time when I worked for a bank as a Financial Adviser in a small branch on an industrial estate. We arrived at work one Monday morning to find the back door smashed in and the ATM in the actual bank pretty much destroyed. The funny part was that the crooks had clearly been in the building for most of the weekend using acetylene torches to cut their way into the back of the ATM but all they'd managed to do was cook all the cash so by the time they got into it all that was left was ashes. Must have been a frustrating weekend for them.

As usual the reporter's stretching for a sensational angle: 'a blast at a petrol station could have had serious consequences'.

Not really at a time when all the pumps were switched off, I wouldn't think. or is every petrol station a ticking timebomb just waiting to explode?

No, Crawley. I suspect it's happened a few times around the country.

I'm surprised they managed to pop the safe open. I guess it was one of those cheapo Triton/Moneybox ATMs, rather than a proper NCR or Wincor machine?

Just watched the video on the evening news. Two quite thick pipes seemed to have been run to the unit. Hosepipe thickness. Anyone care to speculate as to the approach they took?

Fill up with oxy acetylene? Would cause an explosion like that.

Still, look on the bright side. At least it was one of those cash machines that charges you to take your money out.
