Russia is slowly fking itself over. State sponsored gangsterism, rampant corruption throughout the entire political and economic system, a declining birth rate with a declining life expectancy, a one-track economy based on energy exports that will be well and truly fked when Europe unlocks its own vast reserves of shale gas, and pretty much anyone who does have any money is intent on spiriting it out of the country and investing it elsewhere. And its military is poor. Remember when they invaded Georgia? Not one single tank equipped with NVG. Apart from their nuclear weapons they are a shadow of a formidable military power. And if they play their cards wrong on this one they get a civil war around their only warm water port.

They already look like s over Syria. This only adds to it. No moral capital anymore with which to portray themselves as the rightful and honourable opponent to the American hegemon. (And I tell you what, if this planet is going to be ruled by a single power I'd far, far rather it was the US than Russia or China)

Utter s. I hope they implode, and they can go back to rolling around in the mud like the backward, drunk, feckless, xenophobic, anti semitic, anti homosexual peasants they are. Oh,and they're st drivers too.

Joey, my wife is Russian, has 2 degrees, Masters's, worked in Oxford Uni, speaks 5 languages better than you speak English and has more cultural understanding of the world than I guess you could imagine; judging by your drivel. Around 12 doctors in her family practicing all over the world, 4 classical musician's (Mariinsky theatre). She has many friends, professors, doctors, ambassadors and the like, all Russian. All the Russian's I meet are all of similar standing. Please, for your sake educate yourself a little about these drunk, feckless peasants before unleashing such nonsense.

The privileged elite don't spent 10years in University as they have the means to bypass this little burden. Sorry to ruin your misguided image Mojocvh; the likes of 'benefits street' had a better standard of living in terms of material wealth/food/housing than my Mrs. You see, the normal people didn't aspire for material wealth (wasn't possible) around the time of perestroika, education was what granted you respect and standing in life, nothing to do with privilege. High level of academic education was open to the entire populace.

Which bits are wrong then Richie? Basing your rebuttal of his points on the fact you like your wife and her friends does not mean he is wrong hehe

Actually some very good points about reliance on energy (they export very little indeed), gangsterism and a rapidly decreasing population.....long term Russia faces MASSIVE problems. But I'm sure your wife and friends are all very nice indeed biggrin

The standard of education amongst my Russian colleagues is terrifying. 2 degrees is the norm, 3 is pretty common. Bi-lingual is rare, tri-lingual is the norm. One girl changed territory to start looking after the Netherlands. Instead of dealing with the Dutch in English (simple enough), she learnt Dutch in under a year.

There are 150 million people in people across 9 time zones in Russia, so saying things like they're all retarded or they're all well educated or they're all anything is completely pointless.

The consensus seems to be that any military confrontation with Russia is a total non-starter at this point.

That's what apologists like to believe, but since when could one country "sell" a bit of its population to another without asking them? And in any event, the lease excuse only covers a small part of what was handed over.
Seriously?

Shetland Isle history may indicate otherwise. To say nothing of most of America.

Which is all good stuff, but how does it compare? Is a degree in Russia to the same standard as one in the UK or USA or elsewhere? Is having two degrees actually that great? Bilingual here is relatively rare, but then we speak the word's language, English, almost anywhere else you need to speak English as well. That third language, is there a practical reason? As for moving to the Netherlands, was she living there? Did she spend a lot of time on it?

I'm not being negative about Russian education, it reputedly is a very good system, but there is often a tendency to compare different things and come to some poor conclusions.

Don't feed him, this is the same drivel he posts over and over again, he doesn't care about reality or counter arguments he only cares about hi-jacking any vaguely associated thread and using it as a soap box for attention.

Yes, that is wrong, but as my Russian friends point out to me, there are some glaring issues the country has yet to deal with:
  1. 60% of all wealth in Russia is controlled from Moscow. To many Russians, it is the centre of the universe and, just a short drive out of the cities, you will see people living the typical, communist peasant lifestyle that has changed very little since Soviet rule.
  2. KGB>FSB cronys still have huge influence and, as has been very publicly played out, with cases like Litvenenko and Beresovsky, the waters are very murky in business/crime/state matters.
  3. And then there's the oligarchs in general, sort of part and parcel with the above point. More specific to PH - just Google info on TVR owner Smolensky and his father's dealings with Goldman.
  4. I'd also agree with the huge outflows of cash - it is blatant. To my mind this is perhaps the most demonstrative and corrosive aspect of the whole regime - that people, even those who benefit from it, do not trust it.

Russian foreign minister Lavrov to meet UN secretary General in Geneva and Russian is threatened expulsion from the G8 - diplomatic screws tightening on Russia. They would have been better off invading Iraq.
