This, it is a whole science that both the UK and US spent a small fortune on mastering in the Cold War. It is a great shame that HMS Tireless or an equivalent wasn't in the areas much earlier when the box was 'live'.

I'm not convinced they even know where the area is, never mind which bit of the area to look in.

Me neither. No one has yet explained the massive slice of luck involved in suddenly searching a new area and detecting a 'signal'. The planes were originally searching over a thousand miles south west of the place where they suddenly decided to look for signals.

Doesn't stack up to me.

Never sure of wiki. Who edited, what context they are using etc. Uses terms such as "can be" etc. The link the article in wiki uses is more forthcoming.

Probably lots of things we are not told. And probably nothing untoward if you were to stand back and look at the whole picture with a dispassionate eye. Reading how they found the lost nukes in the med and lost submarines, there are ways and means and we are not going to get all the information spoon fed us first hand. They will not go to the internet and say "hey google experts, scan this for us and see if it is legit".

ABC is reporting that "material" washed ashore on the SE of WA has been secured by Police and that the ATSB is examining photos of it to see if it is related to the flight.

More experts checking photos - seems to be an ongoing theme.
