Modern day alchemy has come true
Discussion
Seems like either a big let down is about to be played out, or the next step has finally been made.

It'll need peer review and a reproduction of results before I can trust it, and sorry to say no research body with any credibility will touch cold fusion with a barge pole. I'm not sure what company has the engineering chops to produce something AND is willing to trust a totally unbacked idea.
Would be a game-changer though (as would any economically viable fusion). At least, I think it would. What would we do now were it not too expensive, energy-wise?

I think cold fusion is a misnomer, been reading through a lot of stuff and it seems quite a lot of people are invested in this, it's just been going off behind the scenes, it looks like the guy is a con-man or is currently producing the proof for the world, too many big companies with a lot of money and surely a lot of sense have bought into this now.
Maybe, well, hopefully this is real and in the next decade or two we will see the next step.
Remember electricity itself was a curiosity used to power a few lights and motors, the main players were piped steam or hydraulic power. Things changed not too long ago, this could hopefully be that time again.
edit: "E-Cat uses cold fusion — low-energy nuclear reactions, LENR — to fuse nickel and hydrogen atoms into copper, releasing oodles of energy."
From the test results shown, it produces more heat energy than electricity put in, i think the COP is 3.6 or something.

So something you haven't seen is slightly more blue than something else you haven't seen.
If this stuff was fusing it would be producing gamma rays which would be pretty easy to spot.
That's because it isn't fusion. The claim for that kind of reaction was dropped almost as soon as the first experiments were finished. The exact nature of the reaction going on is part of the research. If this stuff was fusing it would be producing gamma rays which would be pretty easy to spot.
I'm not saying it is or is not a real source of power, I'm just pointing out that they are not claiming what everyone seems to think they are.

I know there are other reason oil has been coming down per barrel. It has had a sharp dip recently as well as big firms selling their stake.
It can't all be down to shale gas and libya supposedly stabilising production.

To quote the article: The device’s inventor, Andrea Rossi, claims that the E-Cat uses cold fusion — low-energy nuclear reactions, LENR — to fuse nickel and hydrogen atoms into copper, releasing oodles of energy.I'm not saying it is or is not a real source of power, I'm just pointing out that they are not claiming what everyone seems to think they are.

So it isn't what we normally think of as "fusion", that's the point. It is still fusion. It creates a nickel isotope that can only be made through nuclear reactions.
The temperature it can do this at is what's causing the controversy.
I hope we're seeing the dawn of something new . imagine how better off people would be with decentralised power generation with no more house of saud supporting.

Unfortunately, Rossi is a nut case who has been peddling his E-woo for a long time. The underlying theory he relies on - the nuclear transport of protons - is not acceptable.
If there is an excess of energy being produced I would suspect some kind of chemical reaction, rather than 'fusion'.

The ad hominem attacks aren't helping anyone.
The rossi story is complex by the looks of it
Problem is if he's a nut case so is the head of industrial heat. 2 billion dollars worth of crazy.
All he has done has let the cat out of the bag. Bigger companies are serctetivly doing their own versions. There's a company in the us who use a similar setup that produces helium and heat.
With cold fusion it appears getting your intellectual property protected is difficult I can appreciate wanting to make some money out of it before everyone has legally copied yours.
