Reasonably balanced article on why Dave and Tories have been spoiling the organisation of a debate.
Chances of a TV election debate? Choose between zilch and nada

Good. Crap and simplistic television should not determine who makes up a Government. Chances of a TV election debate? Choose between zilch and nada

Call me Dave is a smart guy. They've everything to lose and nothing to gain by participating in set-up, bks events run by the Biased Broadcasting Corporation.
If you want to see him in action you can. BBC Parliament. Prime Minister's Question Time.
PMQ is a load of bks and CMD has never done very well at it because between tbr sound bites and carefully prepared insults he hasn't achieved much. He won't appear in a live debate because he knows that his inevitable loss of face there will further harm his election chances and damage the legitimacy of the current government. If you want to see him in action you can. BBC Parliament. Prime Minister's Question Time.

Cameron said these debates "were good for democracy" until they went against him.

Why can't the other parties simply hold their own debate, and leave an empty chair for the Tories?
Yes do this, televise it as a leaders debate and make it clear that Cameron refused to show up. We need more engagement in politics in the UK. The TV debates are a great way of involving more people.

Politicians are regularly involved in mass debates. Indeed I think it is widely accepted that they are mostly mass debaters although I think the terminology used may be slightly different. We need more engagement in politics in the UK. The TV debates are a great way of involving more people.

If UKIP and the Greens want more airtime then they need to build a political platform from which to launch themselves. The Lib Dems took 3 to 4 General Elections to get to their 2010 strength (ok they've now surrendered that and more). Having 1 or 2 MPs is not much of a platform.

There's the traditional political debating arenas like the Commons, election broadcasts, party conferences etc, and there's new stuff like social media. TV isn't needed as well.

The UKIP "major party" thing is based primarily on the last EU and local authority elections, in the EU elections they got a greater share of the vote than the tories or labour. They got 17% in the local elections, which is substantially more than the yellow party did.If UKIP and the Greens want more airtime then they need to build a political platform from which to launch themselves. The electoral commission doesnt just look at the house of commons.

But this isn't an EU election, nor is it a local authority election. The electoral commission doesnt just look at the house of commons.
- Maybe* they will replicate their performances in the GE, and maybe they won't; people's reasons for voting a certain way in an EU or local election may or may not lead them to vote the same way in a GE.
