Is there any mileage in asking everyone to hang back behind trucks buses or even cars??
Just in case?
What if the cyclist arrives first?

Not sure arrives where, but the second half my post looks and is out of place with the first frown
I should have used two posts

I'm assuming this means when the cyclist is already waiting at the lights or junction when the truck or whatever gets there. In that situation IMHO, the vehicle driver should hang back slightly so as to keep the cyclist in view.

A female cyclist has become the first cyclist to die on the streets of London this year after being hit by a lorry in South East London. The accident happened at the junction of St James's Road and Lansdowne Road in Croydon.

Updated article in today's Standard,

"The driver of the lorry was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and failing to stop at the scene.

The lorry driver was taken to a south London police station where he remains in custody."

I like the "South East London" bit.

I was born and brought up in Thornton Heath, that and Croydon was in Surrey then.

So it now "Croydon, South East London, Surrey"?

Didn't you know that when something bad happens it becomes South East London wink when it's good then it becomes Croydon Surrey.

Google for cyclist careless driving brings up a few. It means a jury decides whether it was careless or normal behaviour. This case cropped up too

It would be fairly normal to arrest the driver.
It gets him in the system an initial interview can be done and he can be given a long bail date for further enquiries

yes Wonder whether the bad weather has kept the novice cyclists off the roads so far this year?

Cyclists in London will never be happy - they have a massive dedicated cycle super highway yet still cant wait their turn at the lights in the cycle lane, either just ride through it or hop on over the kerb and go through the lights with cars/lorries & if they turn red, jump them too - nothing will change.

Its not all cyclists, just a small minority - they can only help themselves.

Riding in a straight line would help too.

super expensive bikes are now the replacement for the Porsches and BMWs that all the stockbrokers were buying in the 80s..

Nowadays its all about who has bought the most expensive bike possible to show off to all their stockbroker mates and they then ride their bikes the same way a lot of them would have driven the cars if they were around 30 years ago, with the same regard for the rules of the road and everyone else as before.

Of course, this is "not all stockbrokers" either but the rise in popularity of expensive bikes for the sake of being expensive is telling.

Your right, but don't forget motorists are just bad as some cyclists, just watch the dash cam thread.

But putting cycle lanes in the gutter means cyclists have to take action to avoid drains, manhole covers and the general detritus that accumulates at the edges of the roads. If I avoid a pothole and get in the way of a car, then by definition that car was too close.

Here is a picture of where yesterday's fatality occurred. "Super highway" it isn't - in fact you will see the bike lane peters out just where it is needed most.

It's not a full bike lane it's an advisory lane - see it's dashed Do you have a closer view of the road markings where it pops out?
The road layout could be implicated in this one frown
