On motorways, there are at least two lanes. Nuff said - off you go, no hold up.

On dual carriageways, the nsl or any posted lesser limit, is the same for towing vehicles as for cars. The towing car we have is more than capable of maintaining a good pace.
You omit the fact that certain other cars are not as capable. On that subject I recently had some jolly banter on a caravan forum, or as they called it, trolling. I feigned ignorance of the speed limit for caravans and asked for advice on keeping things stable at 85mph as I found I was wandering too and from the outside lane at such speeds... They went mental.
You can't do that, they screamed.
Can't I, I replied, well why not?
Speed limits? Oh tish and pish chaps, get real, who pays any attention to those...
Then I mentioned about my wife making a cuppa in caravan as we drove down the M20, and how do you stop the kettle from bouncing around on the cooker..?

I am considering a big caravan and upgrading to a new X3 35D, just so as not to inconvenience anyone!
The missus hates the idea, as I am crap at reversing.
Reversing? Old hat! We got one of these fitted, a radio controlled caravan is one of the best man toys I've ever had! The missus hates the idea, as I am crap at reversing.

Stuck in one of those things, why would anyone be stuck in one, every one I have seen has had a door to enable the occupants to get out, and honestly, you can't think of a worse way to have a holiday ? You clearly lack imagination !
Nothing wrong with caravans, a modern caravan is a great way to have a holiday.
I can take my wife and dog with me, one of which is not welcome in many hotels, our caravan has everything I need for a week or more away from home.
Bloody too right - my parents have one (they don't even use it anymore since they bought a motorhome) and it's a real sore point as they won't lend it me*. It's a German Fendt thing, aircon, sat tv, underfloor heating, amazing interior even down to the lights. It's better than my house!Nothing wrong with caravans, a modern caravan is a great way to have a holiday.

We used to go on caravan holidays towing them all the way to Spain every year from Lancs. They were the best holidays ever.
- evidently all my friends will come round and we will get drunk, wreck it and (I quote my loving father) "vomit in it". I'm 47 and have no history of doing any of these things. Still - his property, he can do with it as he sees fit.

It sounds more like you need to stop staying in cheap, st hotels!
There was a rape/attempt in a 4* hotel, where the victim invited the offender back to her room. The SOCO checked the bed and bedding for DNA. The SIO reckoned that he had enough evidence to convict six people on sperm alone, yet the woman had not been in the bed before the attack. It's not quite what it might appear as most were mere traces and he was moaning in the expectation of the defence making something out of nothing. But even so . . .
In other cases (I know little about that specific one) there is normally faecal matter found in bedding even after washing.
Anything in the bedding of my caravan was at least mine.
On top of that, sometimes I've gone into hotel kitchens when working and felt the need afterwards to inform the local authority of what I've seen.
But that's a small part of the attraction of caravaning. Another one is towing a big 'van. I enjoy it. It's fun. Avoiding holding up traffic, choosing overtaking points without inconveniencing anyone, working out when to slow to allow vehicles to overtake and to speed up (of course, never, ever, going over the speed limits, certainly not, even though speed cameras will not be triggered on dual carriageways, but never speeding) when required.
I miss my 'van. If I could justify the cost, I'd get one straight away.

Whilst I agree with Mears, it doesn't say a lot about his morals does it. Hates caravans with a passion, but He'll take their money.
Revealed his true self, a first rate hypocrite. Top man.

I am truly impressed with all posters in this thread, not a single mention of some of my good friends, Roma Gypsies. No I am not jesting. Looking over a horse drawn bow top which has just been restored to former glory, an absolutely magnificent work of art, amazing joinery craftsmanship. No end of gold leaf in the detailing.

I'm confused.
Perhaps all the caravanners can explain how they don't hold up traffic when the speed limit for them is 50 in a 60 single carraigeway, and 60 on a dual carraigeway/motorway?
Unless they all break the law?
I don't see so much venom put on other road users similarly restricted , as a percentage of vehicles with a lower speed limit. caravans are quite smallPerhaps all the caravanners can explain how they don't hold up traffic when the speed limit for them is 50 in a 60 single carraigeway, and 60 on a dual carraigeway/motorway?

Exactly. HGVs .farm tractors, horse boxes in fact ANY vehicle towing is restricted
So give us a break
The hate stems from the fact caravaning is a past time, a leisure interest, call it what you want. The blame placed on caravans for causing traffic chaos is grossly disproportionate to both their actual effect and to that of other road users such as lorries and agricultural vehicles which far outnumber caravans. But, no doubt because their usage is in the furtherance of a business, they are generally left alone.

Other road users don't claim not to hold up traffic when by law they have to because they are speed limited.HGVs .farm tractors, horse boxes in fact ANY vehicle towing is restricted

What pisses people off is people with caravans who don't recognise that their leasure pursuit inconveniences other road users and therefore don't do anything to limit that inconvenience. Instead they adopt an "I'm not holding anyone up" mindset despite the fact that they do.
Posts by caravanners in this thread support that assertion.
