Indonesia a corrupt and horrid country - another great example of the peaceful religion. Whilst I don't have much sympathy for drug-dealers in general - fair play to Abbott for attempting to secure their release. On a more selfish note, I hope this doesn't result in a travel ban for my Perth relatives who visit Bali regularly because there will be political consequences.
?? They knew what the consequences were going to be if/when they got caught. I don't agree with the death penalty, but its hard to have sympathy for them. Otispunkmeyer said:
What would happen if you went there and unbeknownst to you, drugs were placed into your luggage and they were found by the police? I assume they won't be asking questions and that's you done?
This is the bigger picture the Indonsians aren't look at. How many people with money to spend (whether tourists or investors) and no connection to drugs whatsoever read about Indonesia with a mixture of disgust and fear and strike it straight off their list?

Indonesia is a very corrupt but amazing, varied and beautiful country.Bali is not Muslim by the way - majority are Hindu. Go further down the chain and you will find lots of Christians. Go back up and it is majority Muslim.
Mostly they all seem to rub along together fairly well.
I have to say I found them all very friendly and would certainly consider living there.

I don't think the death penalty is warranted for smuggling but why would you smuggle to a country which has it?
I've never been but I dare Indonesia is backward and corrupt. And they've reduced the sentence for one of the Bali bombers who killed people.
If you smuggle say 100kg of heroin surely thats going to kill far more people than stabbing someone in the street? I don't agree with the death penalty overall... but if a country is going to have one then you might as well have it for high level heroin smuggling.I've never been but I dare Indonesia is backward and corrupt. Funnily enough that's exactly the same argument another 'apologist' used on FB ("Bali is not Muslim")!Bali is not Muslim by the way - majority are Hindu. Go further down the chain and you will find lots of Christians. Go back up and it is majority Muslim.

Yes i'm aware that Bali is Hindu - it's also the bit where the tourists hang out and have fun. But we're not talking about this special case - we're talking about the mainland Indonesia (which were Buddhist and Hindu kingdoms before the Muzzies (your words) arrived 15/16th century, before you go all Good Will Hunting on me). Sorry, the travel ban I referred to was mentioned on Aussie news (obviously it would affect Bali because it is part of Indonesia).

Its the way they carry out the penalty I don't agree with. Don't they do it by firing squad? I can only assume that you have a bag over yer head, that it would be absolutely terrifying, hurt immensely and probably not be a quick death unless they shot you in the head.
They shoot three shots at a target over your heart (firing squad, only three live rounds). People don't always die quickly from gunshot wounds to the chest.http://www.news.com.au/opinion/painful-deaths-awai...
If you're going to execute someone with a firearm, they should be shot in the head from point blank range. If you aren't comfortable with doing that (and need a chance of a blank in your rifle) it's questionable whether you should be willing to take part at all, IMO.
