How does fining Google help? They are so successful at driving advertising that they will be able, quite comfortably, to pass on the cost to their advertisers, who, in turn, will pass it onto their consumers, to wit, us.

Way to go...
A study showed that google shopping charged its partners an average of $11.30 for every $100 in sales. Who do you think paid this cost? Yes that's right, you.
So does ebay with their 10% sale fee plus paypal commission, but I don't see the EU crying about their "monopoly".

They’ve been fined for something else now.

“Google has been hit with a record €4.34bn (£3.8bn) fine by the European Union for abusing its market dominance in mobile phone operating systems.

The EU imposed the multibillion-euro penalty after finding that the US tech firm required smartphone manufacturers to pre-instal Google’s search and browser apps devices using its Android operating system, otherwise they would not be allowed to use its Google Play online store and streaming service.”

Part of me would just love to see the superannuated f'ckwits of the EU take on google; they'd lose.
I couldn't resist. That's the problem with temptation.

They aren't a monopoly though. Just like Apple aren't.

Microsoft and Google are very similar in that they produce the OS/Tools and then this gives them an unfair advantage with services via the hardware.

If MS or Google wanted to, they could both easily switch to a single Hardware model (ala Apple) and remove the issue completely. The move MS made with Windows10 and hardware unification is certainly an indication this may form part of a future plan or maybe not but regardless, Apple/Ebay are not monopolies but for MS/Google based devices both those manufacturers are.

Google comes quite comfortably within the definition of monopoly. There can be no doubt it is a monopoly. The only question, settled by this and other cases, is whether they misused their ability to control the market.

It has a monopoly.

Not quite sure they could easily switch to their own hardware. Part of the reason for their respective market positions is the ability to supply a flexible OS to play on OEM tin. So you get pretty much the same experience of Android on Hauwei as Samsung, as Sony. All of whom would be a little recalcitrant to allow Google to ship their own tin (thus the Nexus lines were never Google - not sure about the Pixels)

If Microsoft moved to single hardware, Linux for desktop use would explode.

My apologies for not reading your posts fully.

I hope my actions didn't irritate you as much as similar actions have irritated me.

I remember Microsoft getting hit with the same thing but cannot remember what exactly it was for?

Was it they were bundling internet explorer with windows? Now they have Edge and internet explorer. Dont see the problem as they are only used to download chrome anyway.

I hate to think what the internet will be like in 10 years if the EU still exist. 15 popups for permissions before getting on a site.

It would remove the usual "But Microsoft..." excuse, which might prompt some thinking in some geeks. But probably not many.

Geeks and a lack of stability - people want to be able to fire up a pc and have it working, immediately.

Not, fire it up, realise the network stack has encountered some incomprehensible error that they can't google because the network stack is down, and then spend the rest of the day attempting to fix the problem.

Or fire it up, realise they didn't install the video drivers quite right last time, and spend the rest of the day attempting to fix that issue.

Linux is great, I love it. It's also completely unsuitable for people who have no interest in computing.

It's to help replace the UK contribution. So much for them being desperate for our money. A couple of juicy fines and the UK is just a distant memory.

"London (CNN Business)The European Union has hit Google with another big antitrust fine, the third in a series of billion-dollar penalties the US tech giant has faced for hindering competition.

The European Commission on Wednesday ordered Google to pay €1.5 billion ($1.7 billion) for abusing its dominant position in online search advertising.

The tech company has now been fined €8.2 billion ($9.3 billion) in total by Europe over the past three years."

How does Google hinder competition? Plenty of choice of browsers for the end user... Or is it a case that Google have a good product, the end users like it and the EU don't like the fact Google have a big market share?
