Well for the first quarter century of my life I lived in Scotland and heard anti-English rhetoric virtually every single day.
If you're old enough to remember Naked Video they had a character whose entire persona was based an English hater. It's nothing new.
Anyway, the SNP have hardly been trying to pour oil on troubled water since then. In fact, like most Nationalist parties, they have been trying to find and accentuate differences.
The various branches of my family and my wife's family still there all tell me it's pretty nasty at times.
Except, that is, for the lone Nat-supporting one who seems to think everything is fine.
So that's 1 in the English hatred ledger column If you're old enough to remember Naked Video they had a character whose entire persona was based an English hater. It's nothing new.

I don't remember the character you mention from NV, but I do remember McGlashan from Absolutely which was more of a piss take of the character than the English

Yeah, and those bd English landowners have built mountains to make it difficult for the proud Scots to get there too.
The land reform proposals also ought to include a plan to demolish the Highlands. That'll show the English bds.

For the record - I malformed the hyperlink to the Montreal Gazette article in my post. I have corrected it now but it will still be the wrong one in Edinburger's quote.
The article is long but worth a read for anyone who takes the debate over separatism seriously. It is a non-partisan analysis of a situation that is a model for what is already happening and what will go wrong in Scotland under the SNP. Cultists do not like it when the parallels between the SNP and the Nazi party are discussed, but they will find it very difficult to refute the very clear parallels between the Quebecois situation and their own.
The comparison even stems to the governments enforcing cultural requirements on education and broadcasting - in Quebec it was the insistence of the use of the French language despite it being the minority language among the population. In Scotland of course there is the mandating of Scottish literature and history in the curriculum, BBC Alba, bi-lingual road signs etc.
Just one comment from the article...

NOBODY WANTS TO INVEST IN AN ECONOMY THAT IS SO UNCERTAIN AS QUEBECS. GET RID OF THE SEPARATION DEBATE, LOCK IT AWAY. LOSE THE POLITICAL ATTITUDES. EVERYONE IS EQUAL. FRENCH AND ENGLISH WRITINGS ARE THE SAME SIZE. ABOLISH THE OQLF. RELEASE THE HOUNDS. ENOUGH WITH THIS CHILDISH DEBACLE. Even then when all of this is done it will take a long time to recover. Montreal is/was a great city, as for the future i hope the separatists are making good wages because you think taxes are high now, wait until you get what you want.

Interesting that shoving french down everyones throats is one of the key frustrations.
The posts from the separatists are very familiar - totally unhinged from common sense and economic reality!
They've had two indie refs of course in 80 and 95. Montreal has declined continually since the 70s. Hard to imagine it happening to Edinburgh, but who knows?

you need to realise it is no joke. the rampant nationalism in scotland threatens to do exactly the same damage. the comments tell the story of decline over decades. Why do you want to go down a path of government driven 'us' and 'them' separatism that will drive away the people that actually fuel the economy? From you posts I realise you don't understand why this will happen. How much more evidence do you need?

The precedent is there - what makes SNP followers think their experiences will be different? I suspect the overwhelming majority do not have a clue about the Canada situation and have no interest in learning about it.

Everything and I mean EVERYTHING had to be dual language. I was working for a company supplying software to the rail company and there was an entire office block dedicated to people who would read English computer manuals, transcribe them into French and print them out. Un-f*****g believable. BBC Scotland Gaelic productions, anyone?
On the building outside there were two neon signs. One said "Transport Canada". The other said "Transports Canada". Yes, folks, the second one was in French. Sound familiar? Replacing all the road signs in the Highlands so they've all got Gaelic on them as well?
They'd already pissed away the legacy from the Montreal games. The sites were supposed to be used for major business conventions but after a few years the Americans stopped coming. They'd apparently got tired of waiters pretending they didn't understand English and spitting in their soup. Well done Frenchies, that showed them, eh?
I asked one of the bosses at Transport Canada how it worked. He was well educated and well paid and explained that he'd moved in from another part of Canada. As he hadn't gone to an English speaking school there as a kid he was obliged to send his children to French-speaking school. I asked what the end result was and he explained that kids of the "privileged" became bi-lingual and ended up managing companies like Transport Canada and the Francophiles created their own ghetto and became ticket inspectors. I really don't think this is what the cheese munchers actually had in mind.
It was a really eye opener for me and put me off separatism/nationalism for life. A few short years later Yugoslavia kicked off and that really sealed it for me. At best you have tons of pointless bureacracy, at worst angry, bitter divisiveness. Ah'm oot.

Railway stations too. And not just on the West Highland line where it could be argued it makes some sense (not a lot mind), all stations. I'm looking at Pollokshields an Iar right now. Or Pollokshields West to any normal person. The SNP love a bit of rebranding though, look what they call a government.

On that basis, as nearly 2% of people in London speak Polish, I'd better get the other 98% ready to stump up to replace all the road signs with dual English/Polish versions.

So because 1.1% of people in Scotland speak Gaelic the remaining 98.9% have to chip in to replace all the signs?

You better get a Polish TV channel too, seeing as you're part paying for BBC Alba already. On that basis, as nearly 2% of people in London speak Polish, I'd better get the other 98% ready to stump up to replace all the road signs with dual English/Polish versions.
Might as well like, it's only money.

With people from all over Europe and beyond absolutely desparate to get into the UK, it seems it's the place to be. Everyone wants in.
There is only ONE group of people for whom the UK is not good enough and want to leave - and ironically they live in the part of the UK that gets a better deal than anybody else.
No prizes for guessing who that group is!
