Not seen a thread on this.

What is going on?

They lost the F1 to Sky, make a horlicks of dealing with TG and now they've lost out on the rights to televise the Olympics from 2022 to Eurosport/Discovery?

And more reading reveals BBC 3 is going off air and plans +1 channels have been ditched altogether. Not that the last bit is worth crying over, who really needs +1 channels these days? BBC is a shame though, always count on that for a bit of Family Guy or American Dad.

Not a good time for Aunty.

Regardless of your views of the bbc, their business model is fuct.
Global advertising £$£$ can easily overcome the once unbeatable & guaranteed power of the licence fee.

Because if the BBC try to stump up the magabucks they get the same old, "so this is what my licence fee is wasted on"; "I only watch Coronation Street, I don't care about the football / F1 / Olympics" etc, etc

I can can sympathise with them (the BBC). Damned if they do and damned if they lose out to Discovery and are accused of losing all the big events, going down the pan.

Still, better than having commercials though.
There are some great shows on Sky but they're spoiled by 5 or 6 ad breaks in an hour.
I never watch ITV. Never.

Family Guy and American Dad were the only things on BBC3 that were worth watching anyway.

I cannot believe that anyone would willingly view things like "Snog Marry Avoid" or "Underage and Pregnant".

BBC 4, if also going, would be a loss though as some of their vintage music and aviation programs were really quite good.

They didn't "lose the rights". What has happened is that EUROVISION (i.e. the EBU) has lost the European broadcast rights to Europsort for the Olympics from 2020 on. BBC and all the other major national European broadcasters who are members of the EBU would get their rights through EBU membership. BBC MAY be able to do a deal with Eurosport for broadcast in the UK (as can any other UK broadcaster for that matter).

I hate to think what a mess trying to watch the Olympics will be like if solely available on Eurosport. They are hard pressed to organise a normal weekly schedule. How they could cope with covering the multi-disciplined Olympics worries me.

AFAIK, these future Olympics will still be shown, whether on the BBC or on ITV, Ch4 or a.n.other.

There is still an agreement in place that the Olympics has to be made available to a terrestrial channel.

Whether there will be any terrestrial channels in 2022 is still open for debate.

The one thing that the BBC did incredibly well was a good 2 solid works of sports and highlights when the Olympics is on, it'll be a shame if they go.

The latest series of Family Guy is going to be shown on BBC2 very soon, but in the Autumn both Family Guy and American Dad move to ITV2.

No. Enngeerlaand needs maximum television coverage to ensure empty roads.

Never mind they'll still have hours of Wimbledon every day on three channels. Plus a highlights show.........

I only just heard the intro to the 16:30 Media Show on R4 but there was a suggestion that income from the licence fee was down significantly as more and more people refuse to pay it.

I think this will only get worse for the BBC now that people have real choice thanks to the internet and cable providers.

They didn't lose the F1 rights to Sky, they basically gave them away in a deal to reduce their own costs (and then buy The Voice with the savings).

I don't understand why they are cutting BBC3. It was very popular, especially with younger people, who the BBC normally struggle to reach.

It was a good channel for new and unusual or quirky shows.

Won't quite be the same online anyway.

Meh. Pretty sure the last few Olympics at least from Vancouver onwards have all had really good online streamed coverage, direct from the Olympic organisation itself. That's surely the future. Sponsors wanting to reach the world will ensure it never goes fully PPV.

Which is only going to get worse. I can't understand why so many still pay it.

BBC three goes on most nights in our house! For me it's family guy, despite the fact they're all repeats!

But Uncle, Bluestone 42 and even that program my Mrs watches where the fella completely messes up the wedding arrangements EVERY TIME.

F1 coverage is OK - for what little of it we get. It (TV licence) isn't great value for money for the consumer.
