Well if you want to watch sky sports you need a TV License, that's just the way it is.

You know around 6p in every pound of your compulsory Council Tax goes to the Arts and recreation, whether you use them or not? Surely that should be getting you frothy mouthed as well?
If that's the way it is takes us full circle.
I'm far from frothy mouthed,I'm fully aware nothing will change,it's a nice little earner.

Please could you elaborate? How are you able to watch Discovery channel (£32/mth subscription for everyone else) whilst paying Sky absolutely nothing?

I know, I'm just being pedantic.
I certainly don't pay 32 quid a month though.

If you have equipment in your home capable of receiving live broadcast signals then you need a licence for it.
Technically if you have the equipment but don't use it you don't need a licence, its only if you actually watch it. A bit like having a car SORN so you don't pay road tax.

You pay the fee to receive live broadcasts. If you don't want to watch live TV, don't pay it. Not that complicated, is it?
So is it to receive live broadcasts or to fund the BBC?

It's a license. A license to receive live broadcasts. It was decided back around 1927 that there would be a 'state broadcaster' (operated under Royal Charter) thrown in as part of the deal.

Have a look at how much other countries charge for a TV license. Then tell me how many of them also offer a service as comprehensive as the BBC.

No, by looking at what other countries get in return for paying their broadcast license

Not really relevant though.
I can't see TV detector vans rolling through downtown Mogadishu.

The Swiss pay over €400 a year for their licences.

Its not really relevant as I don't live in other countries.

Ok ignoring the BBC what is the purpose of a broadcast license and what does the purchaser get for it?

We are talking out the UK not other countries. I don't really care if the Swiss pay over €400 a year for fk all.

Can we get some sort of definitive handle on what the issue is about the fee?

Is it that is exists at all?

Is it that it is enforced with threats?

Is it the cost?

Is it that it's used to fund the BBC?

Is it something else?
