What about Elvis or Hank Williams? The Beatles were hugely influenced by the likes of Chuck Berry and Little Richard.

Of course they were - and they openly acknowledged that. Indeed, John Lennon's choice of "The Beatles" as the name of the group was a pun on Buddy Holly's "Crickets", with a musically related pun added, as was Lennon's wont.

I was thinking the "British" aspect as much as international. The Beatles were a real "breakthrough" group when they hit the scene in 1962/63. Although there had been British groups before and The Beatles had lots of Liverpudlian and Manchunian rivals, it was The Beatles who got national fame first and they kind of changed the direction British pop music had been taking.

And, because they were composing the bulk of what they were singing, they inspired other British singers and groups to do the same. Prior to The Beatles, most British performers tended to cover already released American singles - or recorded "in the style of" an American counterpart. Once The Beatles showed what could be achieved, others followed rapidly. There was more or less an explosion of British pop song writing talent starting in 1963 - and it has never really stopped since.

Been working abroad whilst this was going on. Great loss of a Great British icon, I grew up listening to the Ziggy Stardust album.
Stumbled across this 'lost' copy of Jean Genie on YouTube, a brilliant live performance.

Yeah!

What are we going to do about that?

Was talking about this with my Mum today. What a great idea compared to having a whole bunch of people who once knew you showing up and looking sad, telling your family and friends how sad they are for you. I think it'll catch on. Denies the papers an opportunity to profit from pictures of sad celebs, too. Double victory.

Rick Wakeman, who played piano on Life On Mars?, plays it on Radio 2 as a tribute. Just fab.

I heard it by accident. I hadn't heard it being introduced and I just found it captivating. I just thought, what a brilliant piece of piano playing. It was only after it was over that the announcer said it was Rick Wakeman.

Unfortunately, that would require them releasing lots of records and living until they were 69. I suggest they follow an alternative Bowie action plan:

I used to wonder why he was singing about the "Mother Superior" in "Oh You Pretty Things" - and then I found out it was "Homo Superior".

That is very powerful, and as you say Derek, the end in particular is devastating. Edited to add - if not a little disturbing.
