Hmm.
Not sure what I think.
How well publicised was the banning of the substance in January?
Not sure, but I would have thought that all professional athletes would have got the memo, at least. Not sure what I think.

It is her livelihood after all.

I find that hard to believe, though. Surely her coach or someone else associated with her sport would have informed her?

She has a massive entourage of people employed to do just this. It's her fault entirely. It is her livelihood after all.
There's no excuse whatsoever.
If she was the only athlete caught out by taking this drug - which isn't even legal in the US - I would perhaps be sympathetic to her story, but she isn't. Loads of other endurance athletes have been taking it. Do all these athletes, the world's genetic elite, suffer from poor blood flow?
What normal people don't realise (particularly upstanding Brits I suppose) is that many athletes think taking performance enhancing drugs is fine, they are only sorry when that drug becomes illegal.
Some more info, pre-sharapova - http://roidvisor.com/performance-enhancing-drugs-u...

I'm just going to chuck my cynical hat on for a minute.
She's been caught using a substance that has only just made the banned list, but has been taking it for 10 years.
She moved to the US 22 years ago where she's lived ever since, but has been taking a medication used almost exclusively in the Eastern Blok countries and isn't approved in the US by the FDA.
Now why would you take such a substance? Don't the US have any drugs for her condition?

I think you answered your own question. She's been caught using a substance that has only just made the banned list, but has been taking it for 10 years.

It's probably a good excuse for Nike to get out of the contract - she hasn't set the world on fire since the contract was signed in 2010 and she comes across as an unpleasant person. Then again was she signed up in the first place for her on court ability?
I know Sharapova has a reputation for being aloof (to put it very politely), but she actually came across very well in the press conference yesterday. If she’s telling the truth about taking this stuff for legitimate medical reasons for a decade, but missing the memo when WADA decided to prohibit it, that hardly makes her Lance Armstrong. She has admitted she screwed up, and accepted responsibility, so I think she deserves a relatively lenient punishment. A 12 month ban, perhaps.

Do you think the Russian figure skater and cyclist, the Ethiopian and Turkish 1500 runners, the Ethiopian marathon runner, and two Ukrainian biathletes, were also taking the drug for 'legitimate medical reasons'? I suspect you wouldn't give them the same amount of leeway, because they're not attractive global superstars. No Idea. It's possible, of course. The stuff wasn't even prohibited until a couple of months ago, and if it isn't prohibited, it's fair game. Lots of athletes take all manner of prohibited medications for legit medical reasons, eg salbutamol for asthma. As long as it's prescribed and they disclose it, no problem.
I have not commented about her appearance, because it is irrelevant.

I was going to raise that...it's funny how many elite atheletes have asthma!
A training buddy of mine was diagnosed with asthma as a child. It always came on just before he ran a 3:42 1500m .... He had probably long since cured himself of asthma by training, but kept his inhaler handy at all times If he'd raced at the same distance as me I'd have shopped him in a flash
