Ouch. That ought to be a career suicide note. If he really thinks the issue is that cut and dry, then he doesn't have the right temperament to be making these kind of judgement calls. If he's actually moving into arse-covering mode by daring people to support this tasteless, childish, offensive stunt (that still made me laugh) ...

We don't need the Police to be moral arbiters delivering trite little homilies like this. Indeed we need them to positively distance themselves from that kind of judgment when dealing with the sensitive grey area between legitimate freedom of speech and its criminal abuse. Gather the evidence, see if it meets the criteria, engage with the CPS, etc, don't start trying to tell us what constitutes an acceptable view to hold.
I think you are being too kind.DI Cockburn should be deeply ashamed for using a law which has serious reasons for existing and turning into trivialised buffoonery, Of course, seriously devalues the polices' case when it comes to budgets and staffing levels.

How does a dullard such as he get to a senior level?

Rather like politicians, nobody who's that bright wants the bloody job.

Being a Detective Inspector should be a job to be proud of though.

I suppose it wan't Cockburn's choice, but I was tickled that the same article in which he apologised to those who had the misfortune to see the video actually linked to it, to make absolutely sure that this supposedly offensive item was seen by as many people as possible. Made him look even more ridiculous, right from the outset.

Only slightly off topic but has anyone on here ever played South Park The Stick of Truth?

There are kittens, rats, even cows doing exactly the same as the guys Pug. They're even wearing armbands with swastikas on but I don't think the game was banned in Scotland, or even the EU for that matter. Israel and Germany yes, but I'd say that's not too surprising.

It does seem a bit blown all out of proportion.

I'm surprised the RSPCA haven't jumped in and prosecuting him for radicalising an innocent dog.

Seconded on being a hilarious game even with it's goosestepping undead and various national socialist animals. The thread is full of examples that today, in Scotland at least, wouldn't make it near the TV even when 5-10 years ago were still quite funny. From The Producers, to John Cleese etc. Whoever made this complaint is either an overly sensitive Jew who needs a deep inward look at themselves as they have succeeded in general across the world even under great past persecution and such things should be below them, or it's someone offended on behalf of the Jew's and to me that is doing those who are Jewish a great disservice as most, i certainly, would chalk them up as a lot tougher and more sensible that this.

The anal probing scene was banned (on console versions) in parts of the EU even though I'm pretty sure that has happened in one of the tv episodes without complaint along with much worse that goes by without anyone noticing. I'm fairly sure it's down to who can afford lawyers.

Well stated ATG.

One might suppose that the illustrious DI Cockburn has achieved his status, at least in part, by demonstrating his ability to regurgitate on demand the sort of slogan-like PC phrases, such as the example to which we have been treated.

I have no particular love for the Orange order but Scottish police are investigating people dressed as Hitler and Jews at fancy dress parties in 2010 and 2013

Not in great taste but a "hate incident"?

It is interesting to note that, thanks to its Police "service" Scotland has already achieved a measure of independence; from reality, if not the U.K.

Since Peel the general concept in this nation has been one of "policing by consent"; I'm really not convinced that "policing by intolerant dhead" is going to achieve the same traction.

It is time the police - at least their leadership - stuck to preventing and solving crime.

I wouldn't get too complacent. Although there a good few knobs on that twitter feed, it seems that having a belief in free speech makes you a potential target too. Hopefully the Wilts police twitter account is not really representative of their priorities or literacy.

I'm wondering on what evidence you base your optimistic hope.

None really. A hope is just what it is- I mean surely policing twitter cannot really be up near the head of their list.
Do people not think- which would I rather be- a bit upset by something I read, or crippled by a vicious assault. The answer to that one should make priority setting easy.
