He's ultimately saying that Labour stopped talking about the working class but shouldn't scapegoat minorities for the defeat? Can't see the issue although a bit mealy mouthed.I do find it hard to reconcile his own wokeness and class with writing the book 'Chavs'. Without playing identity politics I'm not sure he should be their (our) ambassador mainly for this ambivalence.

Owen makes a slightly false analogy between the dignified campaign Labour ran in the 80’s to champion Gay rights and an end to the criminalisation of sexual practices, and indeed a more open an EQUAL society.
Something I don’t think many people took issue with, I recall the prevailing view at the time was that the Law, Pensioners and Thatch were all out of step with most people who simply didn’t care what folks got up to on Clapham Common (Ron Davies I am looking at you)
This feels different, the Trans movement has some shrill voices and these tactics of shouting down women, the threats, the labels (Terfs) and the insistence that a Pre op Tran women should be legally equally and able to share all the same spaces with women with child bearing capabilities seems to me to entirely different.
Back then it was about sex and equality, and the right to be gay, took nothing away from any other group. This feels different, the Trans groups are indeed trying to trample women’s rights (in sport for example). Plus the lunatic fringe that insist ‘boys can have periods too’. Is frankly disturbing.
Owen I think is rather at risk of missing the point of equality vs protected rights.
