Very disappointing... When I lived in London I used Uber all the time and much preferred it to black cabs. You got a nicer car for about 1/2 the price and didn't have to deal with a driving chatting a load of bks.

There are at least 4 other London apps out there , https://brokeinlondon.com/top-5-london-taxi-apps/

It is like some people only look at the big brands offerings.

I hate being told by those who expense every cab ride they take which company I should be giving my money too

Women's safety is just an excuse made by those upstanding black cab drivers who've never (never) ever assaulted a lone woman for their loss of business

As my wife puts it, cab drivers have been creeps since the dawn of time. At least with Uber you know exactly who your creepy cab driver is and he'll be tracked the entire time

Absolute bks

This is a pain in the nuts. I use uber for work a lot when in London (If i'm not in a rush I walk or take the tube). The fact that I don't need to worry about hacking around with cash or cards (and the receipt is e-mailed to me and forwarded straight into an expenses folder for reconciliation later), added to the fact that the "exec" product is quite good (and i've been in some minging black cabs but have always had a nice, clean uber) is a massive benefit.

Suggestions for alternates?

Isn't Addison Lee, who have an app, a reputable Exec product?

And what about:

It is amazing how the latest breed of consumer doesn't give a fk about where the money ends up as long as they get the convenience. I for one think that a world filled with big brands ruling over everything is a bad one.

There are loads of taxi apps that works just as as well as uber and pay a fair wage.
Uber are not enslaving people. Their drivers are willinging doing work in exchange for money. About 2 years ago I promised myself I'd not give another penny to the Black Cab Mafia. They are the real shysters in this game. I've stuck with it, probably pushed several grand in Uber's direction. Much better service, better cars, I honestly don't give a stuff about the price.

I wouldn't put my dog in the back of an Addison Lee cab. Going home in one of their cabs is like being in a real life version of Grand Theft Auto.

I use Uber and they’re great - Easy and cheap. The LTDA is saying they’re all rapists and is doing everything to protect the cartel that is the black cab trade. This feels like a step backwards to me.

My local taxi company uses an app just like Uber’s now. It doesn’t work with PayPal though so you have to set up a account with them and obviously it’s only local.

That’s the uber attraction though, that you can use it in any country and don’t need cash.

I think uber has made loads of the competition raise their game technology wise. My local taxi company is actually cheaper than uber.

Like a lot of things though, it’s the company that adopts the technology and makes it easy for customers that wins.

People just want convenience, and they always have.

It's not a hard concept to grasp. I'm sure there are many apps out there, none as convenient as uber.

Uber advertise heavily a dream worklife (for example constant LBC ads, "I can work when I want, I am my own boss" blah blah. They even give loans to drivers to buy the cars, so then with debt hanging over their heads, your are stuck in. A lots also seem to be new migrants who don't have a lot of options and it becomes all they know.

Exactly, aren't all of these people regulated by the same people?

Social media full of people claiming they feel far safer in Ubers rather than buses and black cabs

Most people don't get attacked whatever the mode of transport/time. Always the minority - plenty of dodgy Uber drivers.

I don't think that matters to some on here - all they seem to care about is that Jemina gets back from Strawberry Moons/Mahiki to Surrey as cheaply as possible on daddy's Uber account. It was a good idea to start with but there are too many Uber drivers operating at minimum wage.

Well if that's the case then the regulator e.g. TFL is to blame, they are the ones vetting these people.

Speaking from experience, black cabs rarely stop for groups of 3/4 BAME young men (admittedly, in varying states of inebriation) in the early hours of the morning

The ones that did stop would outright refuse to go beyond zone 2

And I'm sure those lovely chaps from Addison Lee will have their licence renewed again despite generally having the driving ability of a 94 year old on crack cocaine

Not that Uber is any better in that regard, but double standards again

I’ve taken 3 black cabs in the last 2 weeks, and every one didn’t have a working card machine. Apparently.

It's a free world. They have a choice. If uber were rounding people up at gunpoint, you'd have a case. They're not. Their adverts may be putting a spin on how good life is, but every single Uber driver I have talked to about this has been positive about what they are doing.

That's my frustration as well. Uber isn't perfect, but the black cabs need to modernise. Even in that land of Socialism, French cab drivers must take cards by law (IIRC).

State protectionism never works.
