I think you will find the card machine will magically fix itself if you tell the driver you don't have any cash.

One week's notice? Shambolic public sector contract management, no surprise there though.

But they DON'T always work, I've been on many that are covered over, with OUT OF SERVICE scrawled on them, and I don't think that you just JOIN Oyster.
I can't remember the last time I went to a shop where the card machine didn't work. We all know what goes on.. even the tiniest of market stalls can take card payments nowadays.

"Why should I pay 5% to advance credit to passengers" is the usual sentiment. Time for them to join the real world.
Not many cash trades left tbh. Hand car washes spring to mind...

If you cared that much about Corporate culture, you wouldn't be able to shop anywhere. Topshop, Amazon, Uber, all Banks, Tesco, Sports Direct, wherever - there is always some form of 'cultural issue' that sells papers and keeps journos writing.
I agree with all of that and I'm a hypocrite because I do use some of those.

Amazon's probably the one I have the most issue with and I use them a fair bit and don't quite know how to square that one if I'm honest.

it is clear whatever the fanboys say Uber has a long list of ethical and morality issues over its use of the app, I have this judgement really shakes things up, it is amazing how people see a big brand and allow them full access for the convenience. Uber lost there license due to the lack of corporate responsibility.
And you think black cabs and their associations have corporate social responsibility or value customer service? In all my time living in London I've never seen it! I wish they weren't but black cabs are outdated and show no real desire to change! Uber is easy, if black cabs want to survive they HAVE to improve the user experience and realise the "knowledge" is as useful as building stone castles with moats!

Always had great service with Uber personally.

Hated the app though. It was very sensitive and not very user friendly. Had one occasion where a driver turned up and I had not requested.

Unsure how that happened. I was also charged for the privelage regardless!

Yup that was bad. I support their business model but they could more "Virgin" in terms of brand. To be honest I'd pay the same as a black cab for the journeys...

Took two cabs today, both just happened to be there when I came out of meetings.

Can't do that with Uber.

not sure where you live but anywhere in the city of manchester and it's around 120 seconds or less

people will be really angry here if it gets banned and tbh it would certainly cut my uber usage as I use it in a manhattan style way, short journeys when I cant be arsed walking because they're just so easy

On the other side of the coin y y mate always tells me that black cab drivers lease their cabs out to friends who wont be checked/taken the knowledge, what is in place to stop this?
Really? Do you believe in the tooth Fairy as well, or does your mate believe in it?
I don't believe it, im just passing on his opinion, how are Black Cabs checked though ?
Black cab drivers undergo a DBS check, the cabs have a super dooper MOT check, that used to be done by SGS in Deptford SE8 for my cab, but SGS have various locations.

Their model of operating at a massive loss to gain a monopoly?

I think Uber will be dead within 5 years. Burning through cash at a huge rate.

Don't bring logic and common sense into this, all those who
want to tap their phones, then wait for a monkey to
pick them up for a handful of peanuts will get upset.

They may, but the model won't. You can't put the genie back in the bottle for an intelligent platform linked to things people actually want to buy... it is a "positive disruptor". Black cabs will die as well. Or they will adapt. Or become a quaint relic, like the horse and cart.

The black cab monopoly is a disgrace.

Uber will win the appeal and be around for a long time yet.

Many a Londoner had their fill of the black cabs a long time ago.

Uber would never have gained so much traction here, if black cabs stopped for everyone, didn't constantly refuse work, and their card machines always worked.
Absolutely.

Uber has have taken off the way it has because it is offering a service that was greatly appreciated by the public.

As much as I like seeing Black Cabs around the capital and other cities as part of our heritage, times have changed and they simply haven't kept pace with what the public want. They haven't even tried, they have actively resisted.

I for one don't want to have to carry cash, don't want to guess at how much a journey will cost, don't want to be bounced and rattled around in the back of a draughty steamed up old cab, and don't want to be moaned at by a grumpy driver who doesn't give a toss if he's pleasant or not.

Black cabs need to modernise, and rapidly.

Listening to some people on the media you would think people had never heard of private hire vehicles. you don't have to use black cabs you know.

But they will be killed off as well. Lyft and Uber are the future service model.

I support my local private hire for airport runs, etc, and will continue to do so as I live outside a city. They will continue to survive as the demand/supply ratio will favour them vs Uber and adjusted pricing models.
